Net Cafes

Are there net cafes in Canberra?

Or cafes that have wireless hotpoints? (Someone asked me the other day, but I couldn’t think of any locations, since all the ones I know of are closed down).

The yellow pages is pretty sparse for this category. So I thought I’d check with the hivemind, and see what is known around town?

There a cafe in Manuka that has wireless and several others around Canberra that offer it (though they don’t know that:). All Mcdonalds have Telstra WiFi if you don’t mind paying $5 per 15mins.
There are internet kisosks and browsing areas at the Tuggeranong Hyperdome and Canberra Centre which are a little less expensive but they are hotspots for keyloggers (little devices that record keystrokes that are attached between keyboard and computer) so don’t go doing any banking or share trading on them.
There also great wireless near Parliament house. Park near the Reps entry and log on, just be discrete and honest when the AFP kick in your window.

Yep – they used to have internet, but I haven’t been there in about a year. I can only presume that they still do.

I don’t know the name of the place, but I’ve been there. They get very dirty if you sit there for an hour on a single cup of tea, though 😛

Oh, and there’s Askel Girl in Gungahlin.

There are about 10 pcs and a wifi hotspot near coffee club in Tuggers. Not sure how much it costs.

Lachlan Court cafe on Brisbane Avenue did/does offer wireless.

Starbucks wireless in the US was bloody expensive. It was through T mobile and was definitely not something you’d use a lot of. (mutter).

This is a useful topic.

There are some free (aka unsecured) ones at the Dickson shops. That’s all I’m saying. 🙂

What about ACT Libraries?

Last time I went into the Civic library all I could find were screens with ‘out of order’ signs stuck to them though.

Must be in cahoots with the petrol companies…

There’s a whole bunch of terminals set up underneath Dendy Cinemas in Civic. I’ve never used them but I know that when it first opened, the listed helpline (to get a refund if your money is eaten) was a disconnected number. I don’t know if that has been fixed yet.

Ha – I walked past them last Friday lunch time – the whole lot was being used – by workers on their lunch breaks…

Half of the people using them looked as if they and were on internet dating sites (not that I’d know what they were ahem ahem!).

Oh to be able to image those machines and see what sordid stories could be found out…

ANU campus.

The University of Canberra has wireless internet.

starbucks has wirele…oh right.

Library’s are good, if they’re not broken. (and they’re free!)

i think the southern cross club at woden has wireless too.

The Barracks in the Sydney Building, near the Pancake Parlour, has internet. Though there is always a bunch of young geeks playing LAN games and screaming things like “You stole my sword!”. If you can handle that, they’re reasonably priced with friendly staff.

There is a camera shop near Garema place that offers access – but for a ridiculous price! Why is it that ANYWHERE in Australia, if you can actually find web access, it costs a fortune.

Worrying considering that I’ve been able to use high speed web access at places like a border town between Thailand and Burma for literally cents an hour! Even the standard price of 1 pound per hour in a super flash web cafe in London is miles cheaper than most public web access in Australia. I’s always recommend a local library to someone.

Bookplate at the National Library of Australia

Most McDonalds’ as far as I know

The Front in Lyneham, All Bar Nun in O’Connor, and Cafe Deli Marco in Dickson all have free access for customers.

Sometimes you need to ask at the bar for an access key.
