IT News reports that RiotACT sponsors and hugely appreciated internet hosts Velocity Internet have been bought out by rival local ISP Netspeed.

Apparently the looming National Broadband network means it’s “grow or die” time for Internet Service Providers.

I have a bad feeling that it is in response to TransACT buying Grapevine, and that Grapevine now has a questionable advantage on their FTTN and FTTP plans.

I hope this does not mean tightening of belts for Netspeed/Velocity (i.e. same price, less service).

TransACT always owned half of Grapevine, so they’ve now moved from half-serious attempts to screw over their own reseller channel (ISPs) to 100% serious.

I’m sure there will be tightening of belts, but it will result in less price, same or more service, and attempts to improve cost efficiency. Apparently Netspeed is looking to install their own DSLAMs, which means no more paying TransACT for all those ADSL tails! I can’t see that making Netspeed competitive with the national ADSL2+ providers, but best of luck to them.

that didn’t have anything to do with the sale… it came down to ‘not enough time in the day to give Velocity the time it required’ so a non-core asset had to be sold as they say!!!

The weekend outage was also unfortunate and out of control.

looking forward to see how this merger of networks goes, there was some issues over the weekend , I’m hoping that was just a small glitch.
waiting to see if any new plans or pricing are announced but it seems just steady as she goes for now.
