Never let social media strangers lure you to Kippax Fair

Two men will face ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Saturday, 12 October) in relation to an alleged sexual assault on Thursday, 26 September.

Police will allege the two men, aged 31 and 20, lured the victim into meeting them using a social networking application.

Upon meeting the men at Kippax Fair in Holt, the woman was driven to an apartment in Belconnen, where she was assaulted.

Yesterday, police executed a search warrant where a number of items were seized. The two men were arrested, and transported to the ACT Watch House.

The men have been charged with sexual assault, forcible confinement, acts of indecency and abduction.

Police will oppose bail.

Superintendent Justine Gough said this incident was a stark reminder of the dangers of social networking applications.

“I urge all social media users to prioritise their personal safety when interacting with other users. These sites can be, and are used by criminals to commit a variety of criminal offences”, Superintendent Gough said.

And you make a habit of telling strangers online where your child goes to High School? Because somehow it’s alleged according to the ABC that they knew.

Given the way people plaster their lives all over social media for all and sundry to see, is it really a surprise these people had information about her?

So the scenario that was described simply does not occur.

It’s like being flogged with warm lettuce.

Without going through non-public domain legal databases, this may suffice:
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/01/06/1041566361201.html

“A New Zealand citizen and a Chinese national have been deported after recent fires and riots in Australian detention centres, the Department of Immigration said yesterday.

A department spokesman said the New Zealand man was deported last Friday after he was charged in relation to fires at the Perth detention centre on December 30.

“Another man, a Chinese national, involved in the recent Villawood (Sydney) fires has also been removed from Australia,” the spokesman said.”

They lit the fires on Dec 30, were charged, and deported by January 6.

Never happens huh?

Nope, I don’t get that feeling. A married woman (reportedly) made a bad decision to hook up with a 24yo man. She did not ask to be gang-raped and have her child threatened.

Bullshit. A foreign national is deported at the end of their sentence. Sometimes they aren’t even paroled because Immigration will deport them.

Ain’t always so. It’s possible to be sent back to country of origin to serve sentence too.

Only in the very small number of countries that Australia has international transfer of prisoners agreement with. http://www.ag.gov.au/Internationalrelations/Internationalcrimecooperationarrangements/TransferOfPrisoners/Pages/default.aspx

And in practice, people start their sentences in Australia, so they must be charged, convicted and sentenced. It is also voluntary, so the prisoner must want to go. Many stay, in the hope that they can fight the deportation as the end of their sentence approaches.

So the scenario that was described simply does not occur. (Perhaps for diplomats as other posts imply, but most foreign nationals are not diplomats.)

It’s quite possible through Google to find out a lot of information about people without them having to tell you. Do we know that she told the man where her child went to school?

I’m not aware of any visas other than possibly diplomatic visas where it is not possible to charge someone. If you have details of the eastern European case, please share a link.

Regarding ‘diplomatic visas’, there’s different levels of immunity, they’re not the automatic get out of jail free card people assume them to be. Distinctions exist between embassy and consular staff, and then within those two broad classes, different levels exist of liability, further subject to whether they were undertaking official duties at the particular time in question. Very complicated.

You’re quite right that it’s possible to find things out on Google, and that’s one of three possibilities I would think. They either used public domain information to find out the school, or she told them for some reason, or there’s some family/community mutual link that permitted the information to be known. If it was the first, then that indicates a level of planning and sophistication to the efforts of these men that is really quite scary.

Even though I would never be at Kippax Fair.

Well there were allegedly three men involved, at least one of whom knew where the woman’s child went to school and knew she was married – they don’t sound like opportunists. Meanwhile she was chatting to men online and arranged to meet one at a shopping centre. There is no indication from what I’ve read that the initial meeting was coerced, the concern only arising when she noticed three men turn up.

No doubt these guys are scumbags and need to be dealt with, particularly as it looks like they worked in a gang and put some time into organising what is basically extortion. But you get the feeling there’s more to it.

Nope, I don’t get that feeling. A married woman (reportedly) made a bad decision to hook up with a 24yo man. She did not ask to be gang-raped and have her child threatened. It can’t have been easy taking that story to the cops, knowing hubby was going to find out about her original intent. (Obviously I am basing this on the facts as reported.)

A married woman meeting up with a man for a hook-up is bad behaviour which should probably mean the end of her marriage and the start of the road to financial ruin (in my experience of divorce anyway). The man bringing two mates along to gang rape her and threaten blackmail and extortion is on a whole new level.

Maybe I should whip down to to the Bondi Fruitoligist instead of Kippax

Either way cowboys, head em up lets get these indians….. god i love beer and the riotact

Pretentious, moi?

No, I just live southside.

I’m wondering why their nationality made it all the more murky…but anyway – here’s to alcohol and the riotact.

Well they’re identified as Indian nationals, so the circumstances of why they’re here and what punishments are available because of that make it more difficult. There was one Eastern european not long ago who was here on a visa and charged with rape, all they could do was deport him.

Having read some detailed accounts of what went on (let’s add allegedly for now), I want to give huge praise to the young woman for reporting this to the police. Some of the threats are reported as having been to her reputation (i.e. they would tell her husband she was using the App), so for her now to have gone public shows huge bravery.

The report that one of the defendants asked for bail to care for his sick wife, surely must score highly in the hypocritical irony stakes. Unless his defence turns out to be mistaken identity, he should have been caring for her instead of out trawling the internet and the streets for sexual gratification.
