A Deakin office building will be transformed into a 90-place, long-stay child care centre under a $1.4 million proposal from Bowral developer John Uliana.

The two-storey building at 24 Thesiger Court is currently unoccupied, and the development application says the centre would be ideally located to support employees of surrounding offices.

There are already two long-stay centres in Deakin – the 82-place Deakin Early Education Centre on Strickland Crescent and 90-place Deakin School for Early Learning in King Street.

The refurbishment includes spaces for babies and toddlers on the ground floor and pre-schoolers on the first floor, where two new decks will be built to provide outdoor play areas covered by shade sails.

On the ground, new timber fencing will enclose play spaces that include sand pits, sensory gardens, outdoor furniture and planters and grassed areas.

The site at present has no parking, but the DA says 26 spaces will be provided, while employees will be able to use the nearby public car park.

It says the two-hour free parking zones adjacent to the site (13 spaces including 2 disabled spaces) could be used for drop-offs, as well as the five-minute free parking to the south of the site.

According to the Care for Kids website, the average cost of childcare around Deakin is $127.56 a day.
