New ACT "Road Safety" signs

After returning from my travel I’ve noticed a few of the road safety message signs being talked about before I left, have come to fruition. A few of them are quite good… naturally the good ones have been borrowed from overseas think tanks, like “Drink Drive, Die in a Ditch” and “Missing a call won’t kill you” 🙂 The others are a bit swing and miss. The “Speeding Hurts” signs have to go, as do the drive N txt, you’ll B nxt signs… blergh.

So what are some creative signs Riotact can put forward to our reps at ACT GovCo, next time they spend big on some of these signs?

My ideas:

“50% of crashes in the ACT are rear enders, BACK OFF”
“Driving, there’s no CTRL+Z”
“Driving, there’s no restart button”
“It’s not a race” – borrowed from QLD
“Driving Drunk? – You’re a bloody idiot” – borrowed from VIC
“Road Rage is petty, childish and deadly”
“Traffic Tantrums are petty, childish and deadly”
“Form one lane, not a competitive sport”

at road works sites:

“Saving 30 seconds risks XX years in prison, SLOW DOWN” (XX represents max number of years that can be awarded to a driver for mowing down a road worker in a work zone, whilst traveling too fast)

Anything else?

Man, these suggestions are so lame! Don’t you all get it? These signs are NOT about being bloody (oops – sorry I mean damn) nice and polite and correct bla bla bla – its about SHOCK VALUE and CONFRONT to get people to CHANGE THEIR HABITS!!!

You want someone to be shocked and confronted while they are in control of a car?
Continuously shocking and confronting people is actually part of the problem. Being exposed to aggression, shock and awe from early childhood through consumption of media contributes to complacency and pent up rage and the desire for faster, bigger, more, more, more.

Typical Canberra pussy response….

Do you really think that a sign “Road Rage is petty childish and deadly” is going to calm a fuming pissed off motorist who has just been cut off by yet another BAD CANBERRA DRIVER who changes lanes without indicating and without an awareness of driving in busy traffic?? I think NOT!!!

Maybe we should do what some other country’s do and a have a live road death tally so people get the message.

Wake up RiotACT posters – get real!!!

I prefer the bumper sticker, ‘I’m not speeding, I’m qualifying’

Tasmania has a good one.

“100, it’s the limit, not a challenge”

I don’t think the signs are too bad… a bit nerdy, sure – but you all seem to have noticed them, so I guess they’re doing something right!

Agreed! However my favourite sign has been around for some time (will any of them ever be removed or changed) It goes something like this:

“Danger zone, drive carefully, nine deaths since 1979”

Hey that’s not too bad for 30 years on a major road (Kingsford Smith Drive). We must be getting better! Congratulate yourselves Canberra Drivers!

That sign hasn’t been changed in years & I do recall another 1 or 2 deaths on that stretch of road in the last few years.

“Go clean up your room”

– YourMum

“That sign that said keep left unless overtaking… just kidding keep going under the speed limit in the right hand lane”

“Drink Drive, Die in a Ditch”

I saw that one altered with white paint to read “DRINK DRIVE/DIE BITCH”…

While I agree with bd84, I’d really like to see;

“This is Australia, we drive on the left.”

on all dual lane roads…

You mean something like this? As seen regularly along the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, primarily for our pommy visitors I presume.

I think you mean our American cousins, dvaey – the Brits drive on the left, as God intended.

“Keep left, dick”

0ops – 30 years! It is just that I am miserly with the time I have left in this vale of tears.

I’d prefer that the Government stopped wasting our money on signs which are useless and do nothing to decrease bad behaviour or deaths on our roads.

…for suburban streets where the majority of people don’t realise it is 50km/h rather than 60km/h…’Slow down f*ck-knuckle’…

Maybe a better idea for that problem would be more 50km/hr signs?

These signs are stupid…..
stop wasting our money and distracting us on the road! instead of looking at the road we read these signs, how dose that make sense?????
I swear ive almost crashed multiple times just trying to read those frigging flashy signs.

Overall i dont like being told what to do on the road, STOP BEING A NANNY STATE! I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE!
And for the record yes i stick to the speed limits and never drive intoxicated etc…

“Exceeding the speed limit is unAustralian” ?

“Saving 30 seconds risks XX years in prison, SLOW DOWN” (XX represents max number of years that can be awarded to a driver for mowing down a road worker in a work zone, whilst traveling too fast)

Yeah… something like ““Saving 30 seconds risks 12 Months on a Good Behaviour Order and a suspended licence for 2 years. No conviction recorded. SLOW DOWN.”

That’ll put the fear of our mighty judicial system into ’em. 😉

Nice sign dvaey, though I think it worth pointing out that we do drive on the left in the UK, and have similar signs for our Continental visitors.

This one is seen in New Zealand:

“You’re A Long Time Dead, What’s The Hurry”

I do like the way they’re taking road safety messages to new levels of passive-aggressiveness.

Whilst not yet a sign, I’m waiting for the ones that say

“Don’t be distracted”

“Always keep your eyes on the road”

and

“Why are you reading this sign, there are far more important things to do, such as driving your car, which by the way has travelled over 100 meters since you started reading this sign…”
