While the South Coast might be on everybody’s mind for a summer getaway, sometimes it pays to look in the other direction and head for the mountains.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) opened two refurbished cottages in Kosciuszko National Park in 2020 and they are booking up fast.

Beautifully appointed, the three-bedroom timber and stone cottages overlook Lake Jindabyne at Creel Bay, and make the perfect base for trout fishing, paddling and boating, as well as bushwalking.

Creel Retreat and Creel View are nestled among native eucalypt woodland with spectacular views across Lake Jindabyne. Previously staff lodges, NPWS has transformed them into boutique accommodation.

Each cottage sleeps up to six guests and features new kitchens and bathrooms, heating and cooling systems, high-quality fittings and furnishings.

The extended outdoor entertaining decks come with barbecues to capitalise on the stunning lake and mountain views.

Guests can walk down to the lake and a boat ramp allows visitors to launch their own vessels.

Great bushwalks nearby include the picturesque Waterfall walking track or the more challenging Main Range walk with glacier-carved landscapes, or the hike to the top of Australia’s highest peak on the Mount Kosciuszko Summit trail.

For mountain biking adventure-seekers, the popular world-class Thredbo Valley Track is only a 10-minute drive away.

There is plenty of wildlife to spot including eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and possums.

In winter, the cottages make the perfect base to explore some of Australia’s best ski fields, with Perisher Valley less than half an hour’s drive away.

They are also close to the four-bedroom, luxury Creel Lodge, also managed by NPWS, and families and large groups can book all three at one time.

The only things to bring are shampoo and soap, food, ice and firewood.
