An app described as the “Airbnb of parking” will help alleviate Belconnen’s parking space problem after it launched in Canberra this month.

Australian-founded parking app Kerb allows homeowners or businesses to rent out their unutilised parking bays for drivers to rent, offering daily, weekly or monthly parking deals.

Unlocking parking spaces at homes, businesses, churches, schools, hotels, venues, commercial buildings and shopping centres, Kerb aims to increase parking supply in cities starting at around $6 per day.

Kerb, which was founded in 2016 and has rapidly rolled out across 600 cities worldwide, quietly launched in the nation’s capital earlier this month with 37 bays in the Belconnen town centre. Kerb’s spokesperson Harriet Harvey said Belconnen was chosen as the ideal destination because it is an area “plagued with terrible parking issues”.

“With so many people working in buildings like the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and ACMA, there is a real demand for more parking supply,” Ms Harvey told Region Media. “We find that people who live around office buildings, venues, hospitals and universities can make over $1,500 per year from their spare parking space.

“The whole idea of Kerb is to provide more parking for people.”

Launched by Rob Brown and Matt Salmon in Brisbane, the app can even be used for renting and leasing spaces for motorbikes, boats, trucks and even helicopters. “You may laugh, but we have two spots in Brisbane rented out to helicopters,” Ms Harvey said.

2 more Carparks set to be apartments

Whenever I wanted long term free parking in Belconnen, I often had to go beyond the offices and shopping centre in the town centre to the public street parking near Rae Street or Hennessy Street and then walk to the town centre.
