New art for Woden

I see they’ve just started work on the north side of the big roundabout north of Woden, between the Yarra Glen carriageways. Guess what – it’s going to be another in the series of big artworks that have been plonked beside freeways recently. I saw the development application for this about a year ago but forgot to save a copy. I seem to remember it’s going to be some sort of towering sculpture to welcome people to Woden. (Or farewell them I guess – depends on which way you’re driving.) Get ready for a surprise!

I’m sure what Pesty is getting at is there are more worthwile/important things to spend hundred of thousands of dollars on in the Canberra community such as schools, hospitals, roads, public transport, new dams etc etc rather than artwork.

yeah,

but that won’t be seen as the current govt’s legacy when the lose at the next election, big lumps of crazy metal or plastic will define them…

or what about koppers logs balancing a rock on them. how cool is that?

I have to say the new paint job at the Woden Bus Interchange is stunning! Bright orange, green and grey-blue is such a beautiful combination.

Totally 😀

Pesty, I am glad you’re not the one deciding how my tax dollars are spent. What a boring city we would live in if everyone shared yourt “public art = bad” view. You haven’t even seen it yet, why not reserve judgment, and the inevitable “that’s not art/my 5 year old could have done that/why are they wasting my tax dollars on that?” whinge until you’ve actually got something to base your opinion on?

I’m basing my opinion on what I’ve seen so far! plastic whatever they are and twisted up steel, 3/4 of a million dollars worth no less! The budget is blown!

I hope it’s a sculpture of a naked six year old girl – now that really is art!

Fantastic! I can’t wait. Canberra’s bland and boring commuter routes need more colour and imagination as far as I’m concerned.
Bring it on!

well paint your car day-glow pink then, that way our tax dollars can be spared.

It’s probably not been unveiled in-case someone has to answer what it is meant to be and more to the point how much it has cost!

There’s also an installation piece of a man (i think, it has a head at least) made of metal between Centraplaza, DoHA, and the Soul Bar.
Its been wrapped up and behind a protective fence for months now (and taken away twice)… Anybody know what its actually meant to be?

Oh for goodness sake. Canberra’s roadsides are starting to look like a carnival.
