Hey guys, just letting everyone know about the opening of a new pub in the city. The Australian has been open for about 3 weeks now where the old Woodstock used to be on City Walk. After Woodstock closed down the premesis was taken over by new owners, given a new look and had a full kitchen revamp. Specialising in aussie pub food and open 7 days a week, The Australian is looking to fill a void left open for far too long in Canberra.

If you head to theAussiePub there’s a VIP program starting up offering discounts to all members. Also, by adding the AussiePub Facebook site there will be weekly giveaways and all the info on upcoming events. Hope to see you there!

have you noticed a distinct lack of pubs in canberra,Where is the Top Pub in canberra if it has no main street??Maybe they should have more “Canberra” titles, like…The”Whinge&Bleat”,or perhaps the “Snob & Crown”..

Had dinner… eventually. food was OK but painfully slow. Really noisy with expensive drinks.
Many better places to spend your time and money.

They opened one in Ipswich (QLD) a few years back, the maori population avoided it but it became very popular with the Samoans and the Tongans. Live boxing/glassing/stabbing action on any given night.

But isn’t every pub in Ipswich like that anyway???

Hey Trix, are you old enough to remember Joseph Kuhtze? Boy, that was a ‘top’ drop!

@PommyBastard – speaking as a kiwi, there’s plenty of shite beer in NZ as well. The two biggest beers are Lion Red and DB Export (which I don’t think gets exported). ::shudder::

Monteith’s is great, and there are other boutique breweries around NZ, but you’ve got Cooper’s here. Yum. James Squire is pretty decent, as is Crackenback and others.

Having not been there i will not knock the poor place, but traditionally aussie theme pubs are crap wherever they are in the world.
Who knows the financiers behind this brainstorm might be led by our illustrous leader K. Rudd. I’m sure you’ll see him there every friday knockin back a few Schooners of VB. “Fair suck of the sauce bottle mate” Just more proof of his working class background…..l

Sorry to be a three-post-nutbag, but the “Imperial Hotel” returns 1705!! While the “Australian Hotel” only exists 17 times, making it, ironically, much less Australian.

Incidentally, a search of the ASIC site for business’s trading under the name “Royal Hotel” returns 329 results. 🙂

The “Commercial Hotel” returns 554 results!

I like a pub that gets refered to as “top hotel” the “middle hotel” etc, depending on where along main street it lies, and even long term residents wouldn’t have a clue as the the legal trading name.

yep, they could have called it the Commercial

I’d have to say that I’d be suss on any place that tried to market itself as being something – particularly if that something was an ‘Aussie’ pub.

Pubs that have cred in my book are real places, not manufactured ones. They have names like the ‘Railway’, ‘Criterion’, ‘Royal’, ‘Greyhound’, ‘Imperial’ or ‘Commercial’, or they’re named after the town that they’re in. They don’t have electronic shit to take an order for a drink or food, there’s a kitchen but it aint no bistro and if you order a beer, pay with a $50 and leave the change sitting on the bar-mat the barmaid knows what you’re there for (and it’s always a barmaid). They have counter meals that only run from 6.00-8.00pm and a fancy cocktail is a black’n tan.

They’re far and few between these days … I’ll leave it there.

Have you all tried CREAM,if you want over priced meals fit for a silverfish,go there…i can tell you its not the food or the service you are paying for,’Dinner and a show!!’

as long as i can get a gin served in a mans hat with a cherry, and a nice truffle and baby seal steak sandwich i’ll be happy….Friggin snobs, give it a chance!have you seen how many wankers still drink at PJ’s(f@%kwit o’ferkins),its food is crap, and its been open for years…

Well, I just gave it a second try for lunch, Friday lunchtime. Same result as my first try, no service. None whatsoever. I’ll give a miss from here on.

You people haven’t even been there and you are paying it out saying its just a bogan pub!

I have been to the Australian several times, the food there is AMAZING.. Real Lamb on pizza YUM ! Service can be slow at times for drinks, but I didn’t have a problem getting up to walk the 5 odd metres to the bar.

Each time I have been there the crowd is far from bogan, and its far from a cliche Aussie themed pub.

How bout you all take the time to check the place out before you continue to knock it.

Don’t be silly! This wouldn’t be the RiotACT if you couldn’t jump to conclusions, then state your opinion in a witty and laughable way?

I’ve attended on a few occasions, top food (service a little slow but that’s not really THAT big of an issue) and well priced menu/bar. Quite a nice alternative if you’re after something a little less fancy for a feed with the boys.

I have often wondered how you would go if you took a “Irish” pub from here to Ireland, or a “Aussie” pub from LA to Australia.

You’d have to do something like this: http://tinyurl.com/ybkrc7k

Phoenix is real, not for everyone but definitely real

There’s heaps of real Aussie pubs around, sadly none in Canberra possibly excepting the Statesman. Even in Sydney & Melbourne you’ve got to get off the beaten track to find them. My favourite locale being Balmain has many, just you won’t find them walking down the main st.

I wish they would open a Kiwi pub, Kiwi beer knocks Aussie into a cocked hat.

    Monthieth’s is superb.

I want someone to open a New Zealand Pub in Canberra – you know, the kind of fine establishment that Jake Heke (Once Were Warriors) and all his cuzzies would feel comfortable in – with glass beer jugs for tap beer and long necks.

None of this sissy stubbie and bottled water crap!

I guess the Aussie pub is just catering for the pink popped collar types that want to appear parochial but wouldn’t survive a trip to Royal out at Quangers.

mmm, an Australian Pub in Australia! Yep, that’s serving a purpose.

I walked past it at lunch time on Monday and there were a handful of punters outside knocking back more than the standard number of lunch time brews. Classy Canberra.

Couldn’t be much worse than Woodstock was.

    They had one. South Pac.
Ah, garbage bins full of Rum and Coke. Those were the days.

The new owners of the old Woodstock meet with their marketing team:

Owners: Ok, we want it to be a pub with real Australian feel. We want to call it something like The Australian, only less gimicky.

    Owners leave.

Marketing Team: So is everyone happy to just call it The Australian?

ha ha – that pic is soooo funny !

yeah – why a theme pub ? it looks well dodgy blokey.

where does the cash come from to deck out these places with most hideous interiors?… yuk

maybe this place is more for the entertainment value (see pic) than anything else !

do you think the pollies will be bringing the international visitors to dine there …. now that will be entertaining

if the NZ pub plays ‘slice of heaven’ on repeat i am SO there.

Does this mean it won’t be staffed by Irish backpakers? But following from other comments, a genuine aussie pub (overseas) has a few road signs, stuffed animals, and the toilets are called dunnies. But strewth cobber, unless some sheila is goin to keep givin me a pot of fosters while servin a pie, I think I’ll stick to havin a chunder in me own dunny

I love the look of the menu! I’m particularly interested to try the bubble and squeak with damper. I love bubble and squeak! Also the warm macadamia nuts are sending my imagination right off!

dont you get it yet? ‘The australian’ is ajust a cover. The owner is people smuggling bogans into the city, you might call it bogan smuggling. however when they get here they realise its not all its cracked up to be. they get angry so they sit around giving the finger to people. typical scenario i think you’ll agree.

When I was in France, at Dijon they had an Aussie themed pub called “Le Fosters”. It was full of French people smoking and watching soccer. All the walls were painted with surfing kangaroos. If it doesn’t have a surfing Kangaroo, it isn’t Aussie and I won’t be going.

I won’t go if it full of French people smoking and watching soccer. Surfing Kangaroos would be cool though. I have often wondered how you would go if you took a “Irish” pub from here to Ireland, or a “Aussie” pub from LA to Australia.

    Maybe they pour Fosters?

errrmmm Is it just me that finds that odd, and a little bit of a daft idea?

Nope, it is a daft idea all right.

Doesn’t seem to be too much Australian about it. First things I noticed was the American Jim Beam fridge. I then had a quick flick to the menu and saw Nachos and their pic on the TV is Nedal playing tennis.

Now a Bundy fridge, a bloke on a BBQ out the front and Essendon V Collingwood on the TV (and maybe a can bar out the back of a ute on a Sat night) and a burning 44 gallon drum in winter.

    I give it 12 months

    Chop

    Pommy bastard2:09 pm 02 Dec 09

I’m confused (nothing new there then.)

If this is an “Aussie themed pub” does that mean, like the “Plastic Paddy” (Irish) pubs that spring up everywhere, they have taken a standing pub, decked it out with fake themed memorabilia and decor(of the sort you would never find in th real thing,) and have attempted to create and instil whatever the Aussie version of “the craic” is?

errrmmm Is it just me that finds that odd, and a little bit of a daft idea?

Should have called it “The Lismore” in homage to that city’s “Canberra Hotel”.

Great, yet another bogan hideout and right in the city, too. That surely was a “void left open far too long in Canberra”. Congratulations, Aussie Pub!

Beats me why we need an Australian themed pub………..in Australia. Given the shortage of ‘real pubs’ in Canberra (opinions vary on that point), just calling it a pub would do. But it’s not even that, after checking out the website, it looks like what the website says, a bar and restaurant.

Still the menus look pretty good, will have to pay it a visit

hahaha that guy in the picture…. classic!

    glenroiheights11:48 am 02 Dec 09

Isn’t there something problematic with an Australian themed bar… in Australia? Has a point been missed somewhere?

i’ve heard this place is pretty ordinary (ie bogan central) – and i respect the opinion of the person who gave me the review enough to not go and try it out myself.

I had one of the best burgers I’ve come across at the Australian about a week ago. Only complaint was the food service was a little slow. We ordered beers direct from the bar to speed things up. Great decor, love those drum chairs and the beers on tap. Good variety on the menu too and prices are spot on.
It was nice to head in for an extended lunch break to watch the cricket on the plasma over a few VB’s.
You should give it a go before you write smart-ass nasty stuff – you might be pleasantly suprised.

    Nambucco Deliria10:36 am 02 Dec 09

And, whilst I’m thinking about it, do they put up a ‘F**K off we’re full’ sign when they’ve achieved full occupancy?

    Nambucco Deliria10:28 am 02 Dec 09

Which particular long-open void is this pub filling?

The crowd that ‘The Australian’ looks real friendly… just take a look at the gentleman- with the mullet & striped jumper – on the right providing us with a welcoming two-fingered salute.

The Australian Pub, where VIP Bogans come to smoke a fag and say “VB YOU, YOU MONGREL!” to persons with that new fangled camera mobile telephone techno gismos ‘n stuff.

I’d heard that this had opened – I’ll have to go check it out!

And who is the person in the photo providing the two fingered salute? 🙂

I don’t want to put the boot in, but I did go there and had a less than stellar experience. It took about 15-20 minutes before someone took my order, and my softie appeared within about five minutes. My food, a simple bowl of wedges, never appeared. I gave up after about an hour. It was a lunchtime and it was within the first few days of opening, so it well may have been a teething problem.

Anyway, I like the spot and I liked the look of the menu, so am going to give it another try on Friday, and hope to be able to report back positively.

    haroldbeagle8:33 am 02 Dec 09

Is the guy in the stripy shirt ordering 2 beers, or trying to tell you something…

are there any photos without the clientele giving a two fingered salute?!
