New Bish for Canberra and Goulburn

The Anglican Church League has a short bit on the announcement that the Rector of Chatswood in Sydney, the Reverend Stuart Robinson, has been chosen to be the new Anglican Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn.

This also means the weird attempts by the Canberra Times to push the Venerable Dr Sarah Macneil from All Saints Ainslie into the job have come to naught.

Any church politics insiders want care to speculate as to whether this move represents a takeover of Canberra by the Sydney mob?

Changes in religious leadership are always interesting.

Are we getting a hero or a Hollingworth? Will he be as irky as the Marist Brothers?

Robinson’s photo indicates he is one of those new generation preachers – all shaved head and bushy eyebrows. Although he seems to have come from an unfortunate background – born to unmarried pre-hippy musician parents, put in an orphanage, raised by Baptists; that sort of stuff.

He seems an interesting sort.

welcome aboard.

Well mr Johnboy, I am a RiotACT virgin –in fact I have been merely a voyeur and a lurker until now –so had to make the first step and comment about something and thus I am now broken in. Watch out! I could have waited but then again…

Well you know, I can’t promise that every story will be of interest to you.

But I’m glad that I’m doing a good enough job that it’s comment worthy when one comes along.

Being a de facto Athiest, I am completely indifferent to who replaced one bishop with another, in fact I am indifferent on anything to do with religion. Whilst I totally respect the opinions of those who are religious and have religious views (so long as they respect my views in return), seriously, is a new bishop really newsworthy?

The old bishop retired, so they elected a new one. I doubt it’s a takeover!

I suspect Canberra Anglicans are a bit like Uniting church types, very pretentious and keen to wear the latest trends of their sleeves. A takeover stoush would be a fun spectacle and would present them with some hard choices: Remain part of the hierachy, or depart the buildings and other assets and go independent.
