Shane Rattenbury has announced we now have new blinds to warm the dogs at the shelter:

New blinds to protect abandoned dogs from harsh wind and cold have been installed in the Domestic Animal Services shelter just in time for the first day of winter, announced Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Shane Rattenbury during a visit to the shelter today.

“The new vinyl blinds have been installed into 24 kennels at the DAS shelter and will protect at-risk dogs from the cold during Canberra winter, which can be harsh and unforgiving particularly for vulnerable, short haired and elderly dogs,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“It is important that we provide a safe and comfortable environment for the dogs, who often arrive frightened or traumatised after being separated from their owner and entering an unfamiliar environment.

“Having a comfortable environment for the dogs makes the experience less stressful and helps with their temperament, which is very important for dogs looking to be re-homed.

“The kennels at the shelter have some existing in-slab heating and suspended beds, so these blinds will provide insulation and protection from the winds and further improve the comfort of dogs.

Just over $12,000 was invested into creating and installing the specially cut blinds after the need was identified by a passionate DAS volunteer during a visit from Mr Rattenbury late last year.

Stops ’em sleeping so ruff.

Maybe we need to start having refundable deposits for purchasing dogs/cats in the country.

Excellent. Nice to see some money being spent on the welfare of the animals. Skywhale? Pfft…….

Look at the brown dog looking out, hoping for a new home. Or smelling roo on Shane and wanting a nibble.

A nice improvement for the dogs.

Finally a nice announcement from our guvy

Very nice (truly), and while we’re on this theme, perhaps the Portrait Gallery Community knit-in could produce some suitable items for the Skywhale – wouldn’t want anything to turn blue and fall off.
