Simon Corbell has announced the ever expanding airport precinct is going to keep doing its thing:

A draft variation to free up a large a block of land near the airport for bulky goods retailing, warehousing, freight and distribution has been approved by the Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell.

Draft variation 324 to the Territory Plan (DV 324) will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly in February.

“By rezoning land currently being used as a stockpile overburden site for the construction of the Majura Parkway, the Government is ensuring the ACT provides ongoing economic and employment opportunities in the region,” Mr Corbell said.

The land subject to the draft variation was part of an area identified in 2011 as having development potential as part of the Eastern Broadacre employment corridor.

“The development of this land is entirely in keeping with the Eastern Broadacre planning study and the ACT Planning Strategy, which identified the eastern side of the ACT as a potential future employment and industrial uses corridor.”

DV 324 proposes to rezone part of Block 4 Section 9 and Block 2 Section 12 Pialligo from broadacre to industrial mixed use. It was released in conjunction with the NCA’s Draft Amendment 84 to the National Capital Plan, which proposes to expand the urban area at Pialligo from broadacre to urban area.

Does this mean that the alleged/rumoured/suspected era of no love lost between the airport and the ACT government has passed, or was that a different issue?

More interestingly, any talk of residential nearby – with all those jobs, and all that retail……..

That close to an airport… they’d be game to try…
