New Canberra magazine

I was walking through Garema court at lunch and two young-ish (30s) guys were asking passers by about what they would like to read in a new magazine about Canberra. I tried to chat with one of them to get a bit more info and here’s a few things I picked up during our brief chat:
* the new magazine will be mailed to every Canberra resident once a month (the guy said it was cheaper than you thought. Costs presumably covered by advertising)
* there will be two Walkley award winners on the editorial team
* the target age group is 25-50
* it will have a glossy cover
* they are bad researchers (they weren’t interested in engaging in a proper discussion about the magazine. All they wanted was a one word answer to “What do you want to read in this magazine?” so they could make a tally)
* this guy had never heard of the RiotACT

Does anyone know anything about it?

Shades of Air Australia perhaps?

Still you never know the mob behind it might have done their research and identified an unfulfilled need for another paper publication just as many in their target readership switches over to bits and bytes permanently. I wouldn’t bet on it though.

Reminds me of the old ‘CAP’ magazine. You know, the one where they left the ‘R” out of the title.

Was it about feral fish?

That’s funny!!

To be fair, I should credit the original comment maker…

Just as long as they spare us the “zany” photos and interviews with Canberra’s radio “personalities”.

Trying to be successful in local media without knowing about RiotACT… they’re doomed.

Wasn’t something like this canvassed before? EIther read it here or heard it on local radio. Quite a while ago though.

They come and go

Ugh more junk mail.

This sounds a little Mickey mouse.

I will just take one point from the OP “ mailed to every Canberra resident once a month” a polite way of saying bombarding every letter box with more junk mail ,however it will cost a venture like this any where between 35 and 40 thousand if not more to print so good luck with that, unless like the maccas guy they are going to print on a single double sided a4 sheet .

There is no way a monthly could sustain that type of distribution many have tried and failed. In the current over saturated weekly, fortnightly and monthly and bi monthly rag trade and with the death match on between the CityNews and The Canberra Weekly, good luck trying to sell a full page of advertising and not dropping your pants.

It can be very cheap to distribute, there’s a couple of sweatshop printers interstates who if you don’t mind the colours coming out all wrong will do it for nix.

Not sure if there’s still room in the market though, after all a new entrant to the market appeared a few weeks ago… that strange old guy outside the bus interchange Maccas who hands out his own single page periodical while walking around with a hand down his pants.
