“New” Casuarina walking track…Mt. Majura…

By Tack - 11 October 2009 7

I noticed the Chief Minister’s press release about the ($100,000)  upgraded Casuarina walking trail on Mt. Majura, but have been having great difficulty in finding out where it starts, or where to go to…!

The TAMS website seems singularly unhelpful in finding it and Google has not been much value either. Would someone please point me in the correct direction? i.e. nearest cross street/ parking area or where to start walking from. I promise to write a review when I come back!!

Much appreciated.

I note Googlemap includes a reference to “Monash Drive” starting from the intersection of Antill Street tracking along the back of Hackett, Ainslie, the War Memorial to Fairburn Avenue. When is this road going to be built? I can’t imagine the people of these suburbs would be super impressed with a major arterial road cropping up behind their houses, after living with serene bushland all these years…. Hummm, stay tuned for some fireworks over this one!

Or tune back a year, to see the fireworks over this one…

The ‘improvements’ are a glorious waste of money, time and effort, in my view. They’ve just made the track look and feel more like Mt Ainslie, which is a great shame. I always preferred Mt Majura as it felt closer to nature, but that’s no longer the case. Walking on dirt just felt much better than walking on this weird bitumen gravel stuff.

This was a great walk before these improvements, its been almost a year since I have been up – time to have another crack methinks – preferably for a sunset.

I haven’t walked up Mt Majura for ages, I’ll have to give it a go! Just follow the track as it winds to the top.. you’ll have to go through two metal fences on the track that were installed to keep the spastic stupid mother fucking mountain bike people off it..

Great, another bike basher! You forgot to mention lycra in your rant, points deducted for that. Maybe you would prefer them to ride on the road then you could have an excuse to post another anti-cycling rant.

I haven’t been back up Mt Majura since the works began. And since I was never quite sure what exactly required “upgrading”, the ‘new’ walking track may be something completely different. However, to do the Mt Majura walk the best place to begin, I’d suggest, is from the point on Antill St where Watson and Hackett suddenly stop. There’s a bus stop, a dirt carpark of sorts, and some elaborate wooden fence/gate arrangement. Around about here: http://maps.google.com.au/?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=80+Henty+St,+Braddon+ACT+2612&ll=-35.239656,149.165289&spn=0.000646,0.00142&t=h&z=20

Just follow your nose upwards. The works begin after you’ve crossed over a few fences (with steps), and you take a vague turn right.

park at the car park at the top of Grayson street in Hackett.. standing at the gate, or the stairs that go over the fence. walk to your left up a slight incline until you see a black matting track… that’s the start.. This bit is not new… it was built by “work for the dole” folk.. Just follow the track as it winds to the top.. you’ll have to go through two metal fences on the track that were installed to keep the spastic stupid mother fucking mountain bike people off it.. When you reach the top of the spur, keep going as though you were heading all the way up Mt Majura..Then when you come to some bushes along the flat of the spur, and maybe a sign, head left and down… You’ll know you’re on the right track when you cross a small metal bridge… then the new $100,000 bit starts, and very good job too… at the bottom, turn left and follow road to the water tank, then left again and back to car park.
