New Catholic school in Harrison?

Has anyone heard of the plans to build a new Catholic primary school in Harrison?

I believe it is slated to open in time for the 2010 school year, and that it will be adjacent to the ACT Government’s Harrison School.

Does anyone have any more information about this development? Certainly, another choice in schools for Gungahlin is a good thing, especially for those of the Catholic persuasion (about 27% of the ACT community, at last count – the highest of any jurisdiction in Australia).

Actually nanzan, we will be pretty sad to lose our son’s Principal as he is really good, both with the children and with the adults, parents and staff alike. He’s strict but very much approachable and really treats children well (like they are equals but are expected to be just as respectful back). I just hope that his replacement will be just as good but it’s a reputation that will take alot to live up to.

Cheers Gungahlin Al for that – I actually drove past that site today – what a coincidence! So, Throsby is the proposed location…but that might change, apparently.

Interestingly, there apparently won’t ever be another Catholic church in Gungahlin – Good Shepherd Church in Amaroo is to be home base for all of Gungahlin.

I believe there are two churches planned for The Valley Avenue in Gungahlin, near the Gungahlin Children’s Centre – a Uniting church and a Salavation Army church.

That’s correct. We’ve had words with the LDA and ACTPLA as to why they thought it would be a good idea to colocate two places with identical peak parking demands, as they seem to have not learnt from the debacle that is the colocated service stations on Ginn St.

I think a 2010 operational start as alluded to by Pigsfly would be a big ask given there hasn’t been anything through Planning even yet. We’ll see.

Curious our on-topic remarks from previously seem to all have been deleted from the thread…

Hi PigsFly,

Thanks for your comments re Mother Teresa Catholic Primary School (by the way, it will be almost adjacent to Harrison Primary School, corner of Wimmera Street and Mapleton Avenue, separated by Gungaderra Creek).

I would be keen to know what you think of the new incoming principal for Mother Teresa’s then, given your child is at his current school.

Cheers – and God bless you!

Ho hum how boring, another “let’s Catholic bash” thread. Seriously, I am wondering why I am replying. BUT this time, I will not acknowledge any of these type comments as it’s pointless.

Now to the question raised by nanzan:

The new Catholic school (Mother Teresa Primary) at Harrison is definitely due to open for the start of the 2010 school year. The reason I know is because my son’s current Principal has just accepted the position there as Foundation Principal and will take up this position at that time.

Not sure where it will be located as, being southside, I don’t really have much interest in the positioning of things over on the north. 🙂

Cheers Gungahlin Al for that – I actually drove past that site today – what a coincidence! So, Throsby is the proposed location…but that might change, apparently.

Nanzan, have had a reply from Minister Barr’s office now on your original question.

They advised that the proposed location will be adjacent to the planned Throsby district sports fields, opposite the intersection of Horse Park Drive and Anthony Rolfe Drive, as shown on the plan with this GCC website article.

> So next time your car gets broken into, maybe *you* will wake up to the results of indiscipline and absence of any moral code in public education.

Are you really that stupid?

My own child goes to a public school & has a good set of morals & behaves very well thanks very much….& if you’re trying to tell me that Catholic school kids never misbehave, well…you really, really, REALLY need to wake up.

Well, yes apart from priests and brothers molesting students all the time, the Catholic education system is just wonderful!

Oh yeah because they all do that…

By that rationale, if you have legs you’re a paedophile, because paedophiles have legs too

What was that about not being able to see the forest for the trees?

I think you’d better get back to the washing machine, Emlyn, otherwise the Hitler Youth might disapprove.

I see that figure as a challenge, I call it “Wake up Canberra”.

At my local public school, children smoke on school grounds and play with their Nintendos and mobile phones in class.
Any attempts by teachers to suggest improved behaviour is met with yells of “@#$* off you old $%@#”.

The Catholic school system (and other private schools of course) does not tolerate this kind of misbehaviour and actually asserts some discipline on the children.

So next time your car gets broken into, maybe *you* will wake up to the results of indiscipline and absence of any moral code in public education.

No doubt they will be able to organise and build their school quicker than the ACT Government, who will eventually get around to building Harrison High School.
