New Crazies vow to fight ACT Prison

It would seem no point of view is so mad as to lack an advocacy group in the Australian Capital Territory. Sadly sane ideas seem to lack the burning conviction which brings our nutters out of the woodwork.

On this note you might want to check out a new new story over on the ABC.

A new group has been formed to oppose the building of a prison in the ACT because, wait for it….

The group is affiliated with the Justice Action organisation, which advocates the abolition of the prison system.

Now I’ll be the first to agree that restorative justice should have its place. But to suggest that there should be no way to remove recidivists who prey on the community from that community?

I’m sure this new community group will be looking to get some cheap space for their office.

Looks pretty nice to me. Certainly a lot better than some hostels I’ve stayed in.

I’m not one to necessarily go for the ol ‘lock em up and throw away the key’ line. I firmly believe that we should have a balance between retribution, restitution, and rehabilitation that focuses on righting the wrongs of harm done to others and policies that lower crime overall.

However I have to object to this prison as all a bit of a wank really, and an expensive one at that. The priorities of this Government frustrate the hell out of me.

As much as a pinko that I am I think this is a bit too much, I agree Special G, the point of that prison is so those incarcerated can be closer to their loved ones etc.
Yes, some ppl don’t belong in the system and can benefit from restoritive justice, however let’s face it, there’s a hell of a lot of ppl that should be in there.

I agree that there is a place for restoritive justice and from what I hear schools are using it quite effectively, but it has its place.

I thought most activists would have been happy with the $218 mil resort that was being built for the petals. You obviously can’t keep them all happy.
