New cryptic road safety signs

Jonathon Reynolds 7 February 2008 75

Yesterday, John Hargreaves, ACT Minister for Territorial and Municipal Services (an individual who is no stranger himself to road safety issues and the possible consequences of drink driving), proudly announced that a series of 30 new road safety signs are being installed around Canberra.

Whilst I agree with raising general awareness on road safety, two of the new sign slogans are a bit strange verging on obscure, to the extent of almost being distracting in their own right.

I wonder what focus group they used to come up with the wording:

Speeding – “Speeding hurts” – could someone please explain what this actually means?
Distraction – “Drive n text UB Next” – looks like the ACT Government are rewriting the dictionary for TXT Speak.

It would be interesting to know what the RiotACT readers think would be more effective messages for the sign topics: Speeding, Distraction, Drink Driving, Seat Belts & Fatigue

I’d rather our taxes were wasted on roadside art, than on a dragway. At least the roadside art is quiet.

What about “WARNING – turning on your radio may expose you to Brendan Smyth? …Listen responsibly”

Or how about a sign warning us of some of the roadside Art our tax dollars have been wasted on.

How about “Dont race on the street, Race at Canberra International Dragway” instead, or “We promised a Dragway, but the Parkway will have to do”.

“Don’t Tailgate” – this one on City Hill always made me smile – talk about no frills signage!!!

“God Is Nowhere” – this is currently outside a church on Melrose Drive and i nod in agreement every time i drive past.

“Drive and Text, You Be Next”??? Next to what, get a text message? Thanks for the heads up, buddy! It’s a good thing i can do two things at once, like watch the road and move my thumbs. Or watch the road and turn on the air conditioning. Beep beep!! ooh, that’ll be a message for me. 🙂

How about “If you can read this sign, you don’t need glasses” in a rapidly decreasing font size?

There are still quite a few of the “Fire Ban Sign” signs around… What purpose do they actually serve?

I get out at write my autograph on those signs. It looks like one of those pieces of graff art (tags).

There is a ‘Federally Funded Blackspot Project’ sign on the road just outside of Hopevale, an Aboriginal community in far north QLD. Oh, the irony… I used to laugh every time I drove past it.
