New daytime biting mozzies?

Not sure if it’s something to do with all the wet weather or CSIRO have left the top of one of their jars, but for the last week or so I have been getting badly bitten by very large mozzies during the daytime.

Went for a walk up Mount Rogers in Flynn on saturday and the whole family got plenty of bites between us. The mozzies are a lot bigger than usual and have no problem homing in on us in the middle of the day. My reaction to them is a lot worse than with ‘normal’ mozzies too.

Any ideas why they are here, and anyone else noticed them?

On the weekend, I cleaned out the gutters. The build up of leaves and putrid pooled water made it a mozzie wonderland. Watertanks are the second place to look, especially if its getting older and the water filters on the down pipes are not working as well as they used to.

Warning from Murrumbidgee Health Services

next few weeks will be ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes which carry human diseases like Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and Kunjin viruses.

Damn… that doesn’t sound nice.

clean up around the home to remove potential mosquito breeding sites.

Assuming that means get rid of pooled water where they can breed, or treat it with those sprays that kill the larvae.

I don’t see spraying as justified if simply getting rid of junk where water pools can be done. I have avoided one side of our garden at dusk for years because of the junkyard next door (neighbours moved here from elsewhere so perhaps they think mosquitoes are normal and nor a problem created by them?).

This year IS different though.

The Mrs acquired a leech on Isaacs Ridge last week. A leech – in Canberra!

Heh. Watch them try to explain breeding godzilla-mossies!

That NSW Health flyer is just about normal mosquitos, not these mammoth mossies.

The weather is set to get a lot colder later this week, with overnight temperatures around the 4c range, so that should fix them.

Nope, these are not green ones we’re talking about. They are the normal brown ones but much bigger than your usual ones. They are in fact so big that a few managed to bite me through a fairly thick cardigan and a t-shirt! I am going nuts at the moment when I take the dog for a walk in the afternoon. They are rampant on our oval near the oak trees.

I noticed them last summer – they’re big, greenish and quite stupid – much easier to swat than the little black ones.

yes, I noticed some at pine island at lunch yesterday, They were almost and inch long.

YES! They are everywhere around our place (Belconnen).
