New delays on the Kings Avenue carpark

Having triumphantly opened the Kings Avenue Overpass not very long ago the National Capital Authority has today announced that they will, in fact, have to do more work on it.

The top asphalt wearing course will be laid on Parkes Way and Morshead Drive on Thursday 6 October and Friday 7 October and Tuesday 11 October through to Thursday 13 October 2011.

Temporary traffic management arrangements and advisory signage will be in place.

The National Capital Authority recommends motorists allow for additional travel time or use alternative routes.

They couldn’t delay the opening by finishing it.

And even when it’s “open”, it’s just moved the bottleneck down to ANZAC Avenue.

Yeah it’s kind of a wasted effort. Once the new ASIO building opens up the traffic profile is going to change again (ie transit between Kings Avenue bridge thru Russell to Campbell is to be closed off – forcing even more traffic to ANZAC Parade).

Is it just me, or has anyone else noted the crap geometry of almost every aspect of the layout? In fact, the only thing that looks any good is the bridge itself. The street lighting is garbage. The lights shine into your eyes as you approach the intersection at night. The lane markings (there are some final bits) are crap. The lane merges are all just wrong.

It is just another tribute to the NCA’s uselessness.

I drove through there last weekend, and was amazed at just how bad the road surface was, with large variances in height between sections of the surface in several areas.

I just put it down to ‘that’s the way we do things in Canberra’ – work around existing roads, never bother to reseal the old parts, and just slap some tar over the old line markings (then enjoy the chaos when it’s wet and old and new markings are indistinguishable from each other!) Glenloch interchange is a classic example of this approach.

Hopefully this work results in a smooth run for at least one completed project in Canberra…

Oh what a surprise. As I have said before I hope they re-lay the surface on Moreshead from the odd place where they stopped the resurfacing earlier in the year and go down Parkes Way as far as Anzac Parade. Might actually make it a nice road surface.
