The ABC has word that the CSIRO’s lodged a development application to build two new big dishes at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex out at Tidbinbilla.

Construction of the $60 million 34-metre dishes is expected to start next year.

Complex director Miriam Baltuck says the first antenna will be operational in time to track the New Horizons spacecraft arrival at Pluto in 2015.

Apparently the interesting planets are clumping towards the southern hemisphere over the next few years so the space cadets at Tidbinbilla are going to be getting much more work.

Yeah it’s not like people just spend their lives locked up in their homes watching TV and never notice or anything.

Good to see. We’re extremely lucky to have such a facility on our doorstep and I, for one, welcome anything that enhances it. Also: How awesome is it that we’ll finally see, close up, the last unexplored planet in our solar system? (Yes, I know, it’s technically no longer a planet – that doesn’t make it any less cool).

Should be able to get a closer look at “your anus” as well.

*tee hee*

swaggie, +1

You’re joking about lack of decent food in that cafe Banshee. You need one of the gourmet pies – go try one and see for yourself… out of this world ….

I won’t make any BBQ’d Roo jokes then.

Ah ha ha, same!

I was ready for a restaurant review.

I thought this was going to be about finally getting some decent food at the cafe out there.
