New home owner needs capentry and moving help

My partner and I have recently bought a new home. We have merged three houses into one, a joy I’m sure more than one of you have experienced.

Not being from Canberra originally, I always find it difficult, and a little daunting, to find decent/recommended tradespeople.

We have a lovely old wardrobes that belonged to my partner’s mother’s, mother’s, mother that needs to be moved up a flight of stairs. Easy? Well, it would be if it didn’t weigh a ton. So, I thought perhaps we would get some removalists in to move it up our stairs for us. Does anyone know of any business that might offer such a service?

We also need to have some bookshelves built into one of our walls (to begin with…eventually, given the number of books we have and the rate at which we buy them, we will need many…many more). Could anyone suggest or recommend a carpenter or cabinet maker?

I’m also new to RiotACT, so I’m not sure if asking for these sorts of recommendations is a good idea.

If it helps with the recommendations, we live northside.

If you’re also looking for a carpenter or removalist, check out our recently updated articles on the best carpenters and the best removalists in Canberra.

Hi there, it is seriously hard to find a good tradie in Canberra, nevermind one that actually shows up!

I found a good carpenter last year, did my deck, new french doors, actually completely renovated my bathroom (including plastering and tiling) and the kitchen is next up in a couple months! She is always on time, on budget, good value and really listened to what we wanted. Felt very comfortable to have her in the house. Was actually a great experience, so thought I’d pass it on to people. I’d recommend her to anyone. Her name is Jody, her company is SheCanDoIt.com.au.

Just had rumbles move some furniture up some stairs for me, no complaints here. According to their business card they have been doing it since 1945, couldn’t hurt to call them.

Have you tried the yellow pages, even the ACT has them.

Yeah.. because everyone knows that the person who buys the biggest ad is obviously the most reliable and trustworthy trades person to use.

There is a huge difference between finding trades people through commercial means and having a trades person recommend to you based on other people’s experiences.

To the OP, sorry haven’t had experiences with a Carpenter personally, there was a thread on here turning into a good resource for tradie recommendations though, you may find it useful:

I don’t have any suggestions Jonesy but people usually do offer helpful advice here so good luck.

Actually I’d probably be after a carpenter/cabinet maker myself at some stage – ideally we’d love a retired builder who would work alongside my husband to do some jobs. Nothing like personal contacts though – thats what sucks when you move somewhere new.
