New Indian restaurant at Holder shops

We went with some friends to Jehangir at Holder shops on Friday evening, only to discover that it’s no longer Jehangir, but a new Indian restaurant sporting the curious name of “Tomatoes Curries and Grill”. Apparently they took over about three weeks ago, but have kept the old phone number.

Anyways, the six of us were pretty hungry, so thought we’d give it a try – and I can definitely recommend it. We ordered mango chicken, lamb rogan josh, goan fish curry, vegetable korma, and some dhal, as well as some samosas and butter naan. The samosas were nice, but nothing to write home about; the naan was typical naan (in a good way); and the dhal was pretty tasty too. However, the curries were just fantastic. The sauces were creamy and tasty, with enough kick (even the mild ones) to let you know that you were eating a curry. The vegetable korma was particularly flavoursome; however, the standout was the goan fish curry, which was made with salmon, rather than (as is often the case) some nondescript white fish. It was simply delicious.

They didn’t have mango lassi on the menu, but when I asked they said that they could certainly whip up a couple – some of the best lassi I’ve ever tasted. A hint of cardamom, but not enough to dominate the sweet and sour mango/yoghurt combination.

Anyway, for less than $20 per person we walked away feeling full and extremely impressed. Definitely worth a visit.

(And no, I don’t have any connection with the establishment, and will not benefit in any way from giving them a plug!)

There must have been an Indian restaurant strike in Tuggers on Monday night.

After driving back from a weekend in Tumut, Mrs Alderney and I were looking forward to an Indian curry, but, despite the three I called stating on their menu’s they were open 7 days a week (with nothing to state closed on PH), and getting increasingly hungry, we plummed for Golder Crown Chinese at Homeworld.

Gotta love the industrious Chinese. Bloody lazy Indians, anything for a day off.

Just because they are brown, doesn’t mean they cannot have bogan day off aswell.

I would go but I need company. DUB, would you like to go for some take-out? 😮

Finally got some tonight. We got the curry pack for two and was fairly priced and had way too much food. The butter chicken was pretty good and was incredibly tender and juicy. The Vindaloo was good as well. Although both those sauces were way to rich for my liking and I was not able to have my usual curry fill. Samosas and bread were both ok. I doubt we will be going back unless I’m too lazy to drive to Phillip.
Sadly for other Indian restaurants, nobody can out do Indian affair.

yeah jehangir was average as best. similar to the one down at weston creek. no flavour and all sauce seemed to be the same taste in it.

will give the new ones a try though, although i feel kind of guilty whenever i cheat on indian affair.

Holder Shops is really not the greatest location to establish any kind of eating venue though I guess this MIGHT improve with Molongolo expansion in the future.

Heard plenty of good comments when it was just a burger/fish/chips snack bar a few years back, but really not enough regular/passing custom to keep anything going for too long.

Not suprised Jehangir at Holder closed, was pretty ordinary and nothing like the good stuff at Jehangir at Swinger Hill. Will definately give the new one a try.

Looks good! Our group of 6 (all Holderites) will definitely give it a go.
