ABC Canberra has a new website. It looks pretty good, but haven’t had much of a chance to have a play with it yet.

OMG peoples…pop your shades on and deal with the change. It’s fresh and vibrant and about as close to a MySpace page as I am to wearing my yellow LeSpecs now that Corey whatshisface has made them famous.

OH No, the font’s different!

I totally agree with an earlier comment that it looks like a MySpace page. This is not a compliment.

Sepi: It looks just as horrid on a large monitor.

Crikey are reporting a big announcement from the ABC about these new Local sites. There are comments available for RA folk to add their thoughts on colour schemes…

I hate sites with too many flashing and moving things. Usually they are ads, but ABC have just chosen to have loads of excessive colour and movement.

Maybe it looks good on a really big monitor like designers have.

Oh god it’s so bad. Astroturf, British bulldog red, cobalt and strychnine yellow, all on the same page. The green is bilious. I can’t go back. What happened to the secondary part of the colour wheel? What designer did it? They should be shamed.

Design issues aside, I can’t find an rss feed for the news on the site.

It’s not just the Canberra local ABC site either! It’s a NATIONAL dog’s breakfast!

Al – I use firefox, so it’s not an IE6 PNG problem (and I’m all to aware of that).

Whenever I make use of PNGs, I write a script that determines what browser the client is using – if it’s IE6 or below, I serve them a GIF. Otherwise I serve them a PNG.

The problem I had with the logo wasn’t transparency issues or anything – I just think the text colours you’re using are too dark to work with a drop shadow.

Drop shadows are so 1999 too 😉

Thanks for the feedback guys. Think the logo is an IE6 PNG problem – it looks crappy at work but fine at home on IE7 and Firefox. But noted.

Keep it coming…

whoops, wrong one. This looks more up to date http://www.abc.net.au/news/act/default.htm

I’m sorry, I prefer this site.. It only covers ACT news.. http://www.abc.net.au/news/tag/act/

I actually agree with Cameron on this, its actually pretty reasonable, but the defined edge of the rectangle GCC logo with drop shadow & grey gradient isn’t pretty, when sitting on the white background of the header.

Everything else seems colourblind friendly and easy enough to find.

Gungahlin Al – the GCC website isn’t too bad. About a thousand times better than I was expecting when I clicked the link.

Why are you considering an overhaul? It’s a decent, clean design and it gets the job done. The only feedback I’d have is lose the drop shadow on the logo – makes it look horrible.

I’m really surprised, the ABC has been churning out nice sites, see triplej for a good example. But this is shocking, I can sort of see what they are trying to do, but the front page is a mess, far to many colours for a start.
It looks like someone vomited in fluro…

While everyone’s fired up about website design, could I ask for feedback and suggestions on the GCC website http://www.gcc.asn.au

We’re considering an overhaul, starting with a new template (it is built in open source Joomla). But e also want to ponder whether the overall content directions are making for a useful resource for the community, or if not, what we could add in, within our financial and volunteer slave labour constraints.

(Send ’em direct to president at gcc.asn.au if you prefer to take your thoughts off-line.)

Constructive suggestions cheerfully accepted. Volunteers even more cheerfully accepted!

Thanks RAers.

So you liked it hey Stereo henry??
You detecting a pattern here as to what everyone else thinks?…
Maybe it was a Work Experience project?

colour scheme is terrible, layout is poorly thought over, and the coding is shonky too.

All the state websites now look like this. Scary. And where’s the link to the recipe index gone??

Dear GOD that is hideous!

I HATE having to hover over something before you know what it is. The animation moves too fast for you to read the text. I could go on all day…

The ABC has blinded me with their lack of style and colour considerations!

Why are they chosing varying colour shades of green (bad choice for a popular website by ignoring the green colourblind 9% of human males), and putting reds on a green backround (ignoring colourblindness again), and having a tag cloud in which apparently everything is highly popular…

Looks like a typical MySpace page…

I thought the layout may have just been wonky in Firefox, but it’s just as bad in IE6 :S

Did they let Mark Carmody design that for them?

Crap.

neanderthalsis11:21 am 12 Mar 08

I opened it and the first scrolling feature that came up was Stuffed Zuchini. Rather fitting I though given the colour scheme and usability…

Complete rubbish.

agreed…. it’s not great.

it is a complete shambles. what a mess.

The Homer: How much did this monstrosity cost ??

Oh my god. It’s a fricken dogs breakfast.
