The ABC has the happy news that a new policing agreement for the ACT is finally going to be signed today.

We’re also going to be given the research that lead to the agreement. But only after it’s too late for there to be any debate on its findings. That’s democracy under the Stanhope Government.

That’s a good point, seepi. This proposal semed to come out of nowhere, and no-one, as far as I know is pushing it. It’s a bit like Calamity Kate’s futsul slab – an idea suddenly takes on a life of its own, regardless of the merits, and suddenly, presto! there it is… At least the slab gets used for a circus once in a while :{

Has anyone ever heard a word of support for the arboretum from anyone at all?

spend less on arboreteums and more on all emergency services.

Everyone says Canberraneeds more police – even the MLAs – so what canbe done to achieve this?

Thanks TAD – I couldn’t see anything about public disclosure of crime stats, or of any engagement with Neighbourhood Watch.

I would imagine that the current arrangements of keeping the public in the dark about the implications of the just reported 92% increase in crime rates since 1990.

Pretty bloody poor when it comes to accountability and openness with the public.

Let’s hope that the agreement includes public disclosure of monthly crime stats for each suburb, and not the spin-filled “data” issued from time to time by the AFP showing how great they are. The spin-doctors’ stats don’t accord with the experiences of people who are subjected to petty crimes.
