A new retail and dining precinct in the heart of historic Kingston will inject new life into the area and meet the demand for quality experiences from a growing inner-south population.

The ground floor commercial section of the Atria mixed-used development facing popular Green Square will boast the biggest Supabarn supermarket in Canberra and be home to 13 specialty stores.

Atria, with 166 apartments and 400-plus basement car parks, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2019 and last weekend Laing and Simmons launched its marketing for the commercial space, known as the Eyre Street Market.

The Supabarn Farmers Market will be 3459 square metres in size, and a range of businesses are being sought including cafe, boutique retail services, agencies, hair and beauty, medical, takeaway and fast food, and restaurant.

Agent Chris Antos said that while the Eyre Street Market was part of Atria it was big enough and designed in a way to be a separate entity in its own right.

He said it would rival Manuka and, while servicing booming Kingston, it would also attract customers from Griffith and Red Hill looking for a different offering, not to mention the many visitors.

“It’s going to really invigorate Kingston,” he said. “Green Square is such a nice place to sit and be, and by adding all these other services and retail offerings it’s going to solidify in Canberrans’ minds that it is the right place to be.”

Mr Antos said as well as a restaurant and bar and other eateries, Eyre Street Market could also have the traditional boutique shops at home in Kingston such as children’s clothing, women’s fashion and shoes.

“It’s high time that we’ve had this type of offering in Kingston,” he said. “It’s got so much potential, just looking at the demographics of the area and the average income per person there.”

The aim was to create a cosmopolitan feel instead of the traditional mixed-use retail under the development, with its u-shaped design encouraging interaction between retailers.

“We want to make this a cosmopolitan centre with a bit of bustle,” Mr Antos said.

He was also talking to a car wash service, to be located in the basement for those wanting their prized vehicles to have some TLC while grabbing a coffee.

Mr Anton said it would add an extra feature to the Market so it could be a one-stop shop that caters for all needs.

He said interest had already been strong with three pre-commitments since the launch.

Tenancies are available from $37,400 (excluding GST) per annum.

Looks like any other “new retail and food precinct”.

Looks good, but I do get concerned that new Dining precincts keep cannibalising other areas of Canberra.

Kingston Foreshore definitely hurt the restaurants of Manuka and Kingston and every additional restaurant in the inner areas, is another nail in the coffin of the little eateries sprinkled around the outer suburbs.

For every great new Suburban restaurant like Locale in Deakin, we see the likes of the excellent Ridge at Farrer or a little Tuggeranong gem close up their shopfront.
