I heard that there is a new school opening in Gungahlin in 2011? Does anyone know anything about it as I am looking for a school to send my daughter for year 11 & 12.

I’m thinking Merici College, if I don’t hear anymore about the Gunghalin school.

I’ve heard a lot of things about many different colleges, mainly about Merici College not being the most wanted college to go to.

I am going to Gungahlin College next year, and I am really looking forward to it. I know that a lot of people are coming from many different schools including a lot of private schools to come to Gunghalin College. The courses on offer are diverse and there is heaps of support from the staff there as well as the principal.

It’s really up to the individual and how they learn I guess, but basically it’s a school, and it depends on what you’re there to study and how you approach it!

cheers.

Um I’m thinking about going to Gungahlin College… and I go to Merici. I have never been to a public school and I’m Catholic. This is how much Merici College sucks.

You may think the teachers are, “genuinely interested in wanting to help students” when really, only 2% of them are. This is probably in any other school, but I have found that nearly all teachers in Merici College have favourites and fail at getting students to submit work in on time or have any understanding about the distractions of learning.

Also, the school is disgusting and old, if you look under a table for instance, you may find chewing gum produced 50 years ago. They are trying to make new facilities and trying to be, ‘environmentally sustainable’ but truth is they fail. Electricity is nearly always being wasted, for example, air conditioner, heater, windows open, and lights on at the same time in a locked classroom that no one is in.

The only good thing about the school is the new library (although the librarians ruin it) and the new canteen which is actually pretty cheap and efficient.

Anyways… I heard that going to newly made colleges for years 11 and 12 is a bad idea because they fail at teaching needed requirements, soo idk >.>

Our relatives survey of northside schools turned up the same answer – Merici – provided, of course, you have girls.

I also went to Merici from Year 7 – 12 and absolutely loved it. I made many friends and found the teachers genuinely interested in wanting to help students.
I would certainly recommend the College to anyone looking for a great schooling environment.

To be honest go with merici college.
its a supportive environment with great teachers who are willing to help the students extend in all areas (arts, sports, academics).
i personally have been to many schools (public and private) and merici college is the one i really felt at home at, especially for years 11 and 12.

Having gone to school in North Sydney, I find these attitudes really funny. I got a bus 15 km every day through rush hour traffic, and others I know went four times as far. Few born and bred Canberrans have any idea what words like ‘distance’ and ‘hellishly long’ really mean.

One of the attitudes I find really funny is the Sydney-centric one we seem to have around here. We don’t live in Sydney, Sydney isn’t the centre of the universe. Sorry for the thread derail.

What about Narrabundah College?

Assuming that the original poster lives in the Gungahlin area, it would make more sense for her Daughter to go local rather than travelling an extra 20kms or so which I think would be a hellishly long bus ride each day. But you will probably defend this by arguing about “academic superiority” or summat. You must have an eyepatch.

Thanks for linking our article BenMac.
The Gungahlin College will commence Year 11 in 2011, 12 in 2012. GCC has been involved from very early in the design process, and I believe it will be an outstanding college, embracing a model of pedagogy that is new to Canberra, and with sustainable design intrinsic throughout. The way the buildings wrap around the new town square park and stage will be symbolic of the college having a role very tightly interwoven with the town and community. The library will be cutting edge too and shared with the college. The whole precinct will I believe be a credit to the whole design team.

The Harrison High School is to open in 2012.

A high school campus of the newly opened Catholic school in Harrison will be built adjacent to the Throsby Playing Fields over Horse Park Drive from Anthony Rolfe Ave in coming years but not sure when.

And if I have my way, a P-3 plus childcare will be built on the Community-zoned land in Franklin to take some of the pressure off the already overloaded Harrison Primary School.

I think that’s it for the near future – until Moncrieff and Kenny come on line.

What about Narrabundah College?

I don’t want to sound rude, but when did posting to this site replace spending 5 seconds doing your own research? The details are right there, on the front page of the ACT department of education (if you can’t find that site by yourself you should probably just turn the computer off and walk away). I really can’t imagine how it could possibly be any easier to find on your own.

The new college is opening along with a library and other ammenities across from the Canberra Raiders club.
