ANU

Renowned artist, and candidate for the best name ever, Wolfgang Buttress has put the finishing touched on the ANU Science Precinct with a new sculpture called UNA. I see what he did there.

The magic of the sculpture is revealed once you look inside, peering through the hole of a single ‘star’. The highly polished inner sphere reflects tiny rays of light filtering through the outer ball. The effect changes at different times of the day.

The two-tonne structure sits in the courtyard between the Linnaeus and College of Science Teaching buildings on Linnaeus Way. Installation of the artwork was quite an operation says Project Manager, Rebecca Townsend of Artscape International.

Not being a one trick pony out friend Wolfgang has also opened an exhibition at the ANU featuring paintings, maquettes, and drawings.

Meditating on nature, Buttress’ work evokes universal structures. The symmetry of the human body is also present throughout the natural world – evident in cell formation, nautilus shells, diatoms and the stars themselves. By associating us with these phenomena, Buttress seeks to re-establish a more empathetic and harmonious relationship with the universe by means of poetic place-markers which engender the feeling of centeredness.

Reptoid egg. Once you look into it, your soul belongs to them.

I dunno… I heard areas of ANU are haunted

That would explain the shadowy figures…

It’s worth pointing out the image above is not a photo, but a computer generated / artist’s impression picture. The sphere’s been installed, but is currently (as of Wednesday, anyway) fenced off.
