Passengers departing Canberra Airport are now undergoing new security examinations after the installation of powerful bag and body screening technology.

The Airport, which is taking about 100 flights a week in the current COVID-19 environment, said it had acquired the technology to meet new government regulations on security screening and provide a better service for passengers who no longer need to remove certain items from their bags.

Head of Aviation Michael Thomson said the new machines would provide even better screening of passengers and mean safer flying.

“The new machines have reached the highest level of security certification, and eliminate the need to remove liquids, aerosols and electronic devices like laptops from cabin bags,” he said.

“Several passengers can put their bags down simultaneously for screening, compared to the previous system where passengers had to wait for their turn.”

Mr Thomson said passengers paused briefly as they pass through the body screening machine and it provided a safe full image for operators to review.

”This more informative image, coupled with automatic algorithms to help guide operators to items of interest, makes this a truly powerful security tool,” he said.

“We have invested in the new technology as part of our ongoing improvements to passenger experience – without compromising on safety. They also allow for better utilisation of staff while increasing the security outcome for everyone.”

Body scanners can detect non-metallic prohibited items that may be worn or carried on one’s body.

Canberra Airport is continuing its body temperature scanning of all passengers with thermal cameras at security as part of its measures to make the airport a COVID-19 safe environment.

The Airport has been pushing for more borders to reopen so domestic flights can increase, as well as advocating Canberra as the Australian port for a Trans-Tasman bubble but the deteriorating situation in Victoria and growing concerns in Sydney have left the aviation industry in limbo.
