Beyondblue are starting up a new program named NewAccess reports ABC News.

The goal of NewAccess is to help people identify the signs of depression early and seek help before their condition worsens, thus creating more problems for themselves and other support services.

CEO of Beyondblue Kate Carnell claims the new service which is due to start in October is an Australian first.

“It’s so important to get the support that you need earlier, before the condition worsens,” she said.

“We know recovery happens lots quicker the earlier you get to it.”

Ms Carnell says the ground-breaking service offers complete privacy.

“It can be accessed on the phone, face-to-face meeting, or there’s even online resources as well,” she said.

“So there’s a real capacity to do it without any of the possible embarrassment or stigma that might be associated with some other services.”

She says it is important people are aware of the symptoms of depression and seek help before it is too late.

“Depression and anxiety doesn’t just impact upon the person who’s experiencing it, it affects the whole family, workplaces, friends,” she said.

“To be able to get in earlier to help recovery occur quicker helps the whole community.”

Obviously you have never had an encounter with the black dog or you wouldn’t be trivialising this.

a) That remark was not “trivialising this”.
b) Even people with experience of depression have a sense of humour.
c) You are more culpable of demeaning people with depression by making out that we should be sombre and downbeat about everything, that helps people with depression not one jot.

As bundah has pointed out, Carnell was a chemist dispensing medication for people with depression. I am sure she will take the responsibilities of her new position very seriously.

I’m sure as a dispensing chemist she gave out haemorrhoid cream too, are we allowed to make jokes about her being a pain in the ass?

Not wrong there although I must admit that when she owned the Red Hill chemist shop back in the late seventies I did find her strangely attractive .Must of been the drugs 🙂

OMFG.

Unbelievable.

Just as she did as chief minister. Yeah right.

Without trivialising Beyond Blue, I was a bit sad when Kate got the gig there. She’s no doubt a good professional mouthpiece for hire given her experience spruiking for the GPs, and the timber industry, and the grocers, but I don’t find her convincing as a mental health advocate.

As I’ve said on many an occasion, as a pollie Carnell made a bloody good chemist and dispensed medication for depression with aplomb..
