New solar installs to get 30c/kW

The Greens’ Shane Rattenbury is celebrating opening the “medium scale” feed in tariff for solar panels to installations down to 0 kW (so all of them).

The Liberals were needed to support it and Zed Seselja has a circuitous explanation.

The upshot is new installs will be able to get 30c per kW on power they generate.

The language used to describe how the old program was closed really gets under my skin. In particular reference to it being suddenly cut etc and the effects this has had on the so called “industry”. The simple truthful fact is the program had two conditions to determine the end, one was a ‘subscription’ level and the other an absolute date with the program closing when either of the conditions were first met. This ended up being subscription. So the industry managed to get it’s investments worth so should hardly be crying poor.

End result of all this is the consumer will be the one paying for the cost of all this, and it ain’t anywhere near as environmentally friendly as many would have us believe. Just watch what will happen in 5 years time as many of these early install panels start to slow down

Isn’t 1 nice, green dolphin friendly kW generated from a household rooftop the same as 1 kW generated from an office/factory rooftop?

Nope, because household roof top solar can be so easily blocked by trees, neighbours and poor location. Larger installations can have more money spent on them to be better sited.

Solar power is a waste of money no matter how you do it. House hold roof top just more so.

Environment Minister Simon Corbell says it will be a disaster, locking out businesses wanting to take part in the scheme.
Quote from Simon Corbell:

“The medium-scale generator category will be swamped with applications from households and it means those larger-scale installations that are going onto large office buildings, onto factory roof tops won’t happen because they’re going to be swallowed up by the quicker to install, easier to install micro-generation,” he said. “This is a real tragedy for larger-scale renewable energy generation in Canberra.”

So what? Isn’t 1 nice, green dolphin friendly kW generated from a household rooftop the same as 1 kW generated from an office/factory rooftop?

30c/kWh is certainly better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick 🙂

It’ll take a while longer to pay off the system but heck, sign me up for the money printing licence!

Well labors ‘green’ tinge is looking positively brown. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/07/01/3258228.htm

Why on earth have a cap at all?
