Today Andrew Barr turned the first sod at the new UC Sporting Commons.

The ACT Government has committed $5 million into developing this facility, which will apparently be “world-class”.

The Commons will include an ACT Sports Hall of Fame, a new headquarters for the Brumbies, sports studies teaching and research facilities, a bocce court and new student sports facilities. Special Olympics and ACTSPORT will also call the new building home.

The Commons will be a hub for the University’s sport-related teaching and research activities. UC has long-been proud of its role in nurturing the next generation of sporting professionals, catering for the needs of student athletes and providing a campus life that encourages participation in physical activity. The vision for the Sporting Commons is an extension of this.

Students at a university level, and also local school children, will be able to learn about sport and fitness from leading professionals in the field.

The Commons will include a new Sports House, which is the home for ACTSPORT, local sport’s peak body. This will continue the Sports House tradition as an incubator for smaller, developing sporting organisations.

The Commons will give community sports a high-profile location and one that improves the opportunities for cross-pollination with high-performance sports and the capacity to draw on expertise and resources from within the University.

This is a great idea, for the student of UC and for sport in the ACT but what is with the name? Commons, bit naff isn’t it, surely Sports Hub or Precinct would be better. This isn’t England, we don’t have Commons. Come on, someone come up with something better than that. For $5M it deserves to have a decent name.

Unis complain bitterly about funding cuts but can afford to build a world class bocce court.
