New street furniture in Civic

Over the last few weeks, little cages have sprung up around street furniture, bench seats and rubbish bins, in Garema Place. The old yellow bins and blue benches have been replaced. Ok, the yellow rubbish bins were pretty ugly, and the stainless steel ones replacing them are an improvement.

The new bench seats look like the new bins, burnished stainless steel, and have a dark grey speckled faux marble seat. They are very geometric, all right angles. And they are damn uncomfortable! I test sat the ones outside O’Porto a couple of times, and they’re terrible. The old blue ones, on the other hand, are very comfortable, and I spent many lunchtimes whiling away some time in the sun reading while comfortably ensconced in them.

Where am I going to sit now? Damn it. What idiot chose these without sitting on them first!

Did you say there are BINS???

But what if someone leaves an unattended package (err.. rubbish) in one? Be alarmed, not alert.

“New street furniture in Civic..?” I’m sure if one were homeless, one might think that had a lovely ring to it.

Did you say there are BINS???

Or to put it another way, I guess I have no incentive to argue…

Hey it’s been a long week okay, sometimes my own lame jokes are all that keep me going.

I would suggest that the more logical interpretation is that the Government is indeed attempting to please you, but that it has failed in this instance for another reason.

Really no reason for me to argue the point then is there.

Because they are the government?

The primary purpose of all public benches is to make them too uncomfortable to sleep on.

Quite why we’re not trying to provide comfortable beds for those sleeping rough is a question for another day.

Funnily enough, when I was doing my test sit today, there was a young guy sleeping on one of the new ones, complete with sleeping bag. He seemed to be sleeping well, though I don’t know how!

How about tomorrow?

jakez: Isn’t the logical extension of that argument that they wouldn’t provide street furniture at all? Given the provable existence of street furniture, this seems to imply a flaw in the argument.

Oh for crying out loud caf.

FINE, because RiotACT has apparently suddenly become a peer reviewed journal, I’ll clarify.

The Government has very little incentive to please you.

Remember, just about everyone votes for the same two lots of morons, so in the end, we deserve what we get.

Further, there may be method in their madness. If you make public furniture too comfortable, you might encourage the homeless to congregate in areas where we’d rather they not do so. Moving the comfortable furniture to somewhere out of sight and leaving the important areas with the uncomfortable stuff would help make the important areas seem a bit less trashy.

Further still, perhaps the new furniture came free as part of some street advertising, err, bus stop shelter installation. Shaky finances and all. “Bring me the machine that goes Ping!”

The Government has no incentive to please you. You don’t know who to blame; when you find out who to blame you won’t get anywhere; and when election time comes around you won’t base your vote on this issue.
