TAMS have proudly unveiled their new fllet of street sweepers:

“Every year ACT street sweepers cover a distance of about 17,000 kilometres of local roads, or about the distance from Canberra to London, and we hope these new sweepers will allow us to provide an even greater coverage. We could see as much as 2,000 km more a year with the new vehicles as they are more fuel efficient and require less maintenance.

“One major improvement with the new sweeper is the reduction in noise levels. While the previous sweepers produced an acceptable level of noise to allow for service in commercial areas from 4 pm to midnight, the new sweepers are quiet enough for use in residential areas during this same period.

“The sweepers meet the EURO V emission standard, reducing the vehicles’ environmental footprint, and they also have a number of cost saving features.

“The sweepers have an upgraded gear box and use suction sweeping to clean roads. These features reduce wear and tear, in turn reducing maintenance costs. The sweepers have an increased hopper size, meaning they need to take fewer trips to depots to unload, saving more fuel and further reducing their environmental impact,” Mr Gill said.

The new equipment will cost $90,000 a year to run, which should save $2,500 in running costs.

EURO V emission…does that mean that they play Abba songs, like ice creams vans gone Swedish? Or Daft Punk?

Or Plastic Bertrand

Oh dear, don’t mention the English version called Jet Boy Jet Girl with its lyrics about gay sado-masochism. Catholic-owned 2SM in Sydney would not play the Plastic Bertrand version until they received a full translation of the lyrics and an assurance there was nothing gay about it.

‘The Final Countdown’. Over and over and over and over…

JC yes they are Arabic numerals. The Arabic empire basically gave us mathematics as you would recognise it today including base 10, the use of zero as a placeholder and as a concept in itself and of course with all of that came the ability to express any number unambiguously with just those 10 symbols, and to compute consistently and unambiguously using same. Never been done before!

At least they know what the standard is, unlike Action buses who have one of their buses sign written that it is the first Euro 5 MAN bus for Action.

Not meaning to be pedantic, but Euro V using roman numerals is the heavy vehicle standard, Euro 5 with the what ever we call ‘normal’ numbers (think they are Arabic) is a light vehicle/car standard.

Pity though these are just Euro V, as Euro VI has been available in Europe for sometime, with Euro V, which was introduced in 2008 being phased out at the end of the year.

Hang on. 17,000km a year is 340km a week (operating 50 weeks a year). That equates to 68km per day or 4.25km per hour (operating 8am until midnight). Shared between 4 machines is just over 1 km per hour per machine. I reckon I could match that rate with a broom.

The media release clearly says 4pm to midnight.

Err, hello, that’s each machine. Assuming that they only have one eight hour shift each day and allow a bit for travelling between sites, it comes out at about 10 km/h (which if you’ve seen one in action is about how fast they go).

TAMS does appear to be speaking in plurals – “Every year ACT street sweepers cover a distance of about 17,000 kilometres of local roads” and “2,000 km more a year with the new vehicles”. Nowhere do they say it’s for each machine.

It took them about 7 weeks to put a couple of speed bumps in at Curtin when a German gang would have done it overnight, so maybe it is true.

go on then.

i doubt they’d be that regular or work those hrs – 8am to midnight? i’d halve that, so you’ve now to cover eight and a half kays an hour. get runnin’… 🙂

I’d like to submit this photo for the Monday Parking series. Just look at these entitled pricks parking in the median on Anzac Parade.

They can sweep up all the loose gravel from the recently shard-sealed roads, and stockpile it ready for the next round of shard-sealing.
