According to This article on abc online, Development in the Molonglo Valley in Canberra’s west has moved a step closer with the naming of the first three suburbs in the area.

The exciting news of all this of course is that “The development is being planned to set a new standard in suburb design and development,” according to Andrew Barr.

“It will achieve greater energy efficiency, higher water efficiency and quality, and better links to open spaces and transport.”

Yay. i cant wait to move…

I’m having a little trouble, probably because we don’t share bed-buddies.

DMD, wake up and smell the lanoline, mate! 🙂

No, you’re feeling sheep, you dirty Nz’er!

I am starting to feel a little sheepish about this line of chat.

Don’t make me bring out….the SHEARS!

DMD, don’t – you’ll get me excited!

Baa!

“It’s f-king drab brown hills, Thumper – you want nice countryside, head to some of the country just inland from the south and north coast.”

West Coast of the South Island beats everything, hands down! 🙂

Also… 33 000 for 73 000 people works out to be 2.2 people per house, very low figures compared to most ‘burbs… So they’re planning for either lots of DINKs or single mums out there.

Does this form part of the much lauded “land releases for affordable housing” that Chairman Stanhope of the Peoples Republic of Canberra was spouting about a while ago? Or will you be buying 200sqm blocks for the equivilent of Liberias national deficit?

It’s f-king drab brown hills, Thumper – you want nice countryside, head to some of the country just inland from the south and north coast.

err, try writer Judith Wright

A suburb named after notorious child molester Keith Wright? Now we’ve heard everything.

MJy personal favourite is the irony of a suburb near the poo works after a bloke named ‘nugget’

If Grassby gets up as a suburb name, then the suburb next-door should be called Mackay!

I say they should dispense with Wright, Sulman & Coombs and use their first names, then we could have the suburbs of Judith, John and Nugget (obviously Nugget would incorporate the old Stromlo treatment works).

So lots more identical little boxes or 150sq homes on 30sq blocks – yay for the ACT!

I hope it looks better than Getto-gahlin.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I should get my hopes up.

The thing is Thumper, pick just about any part of Canberra and someone would have said that prior to it being built.

People prefer to live in cities (or need to for practical reasons), cities have to exist somewhere.

You’re spot on though, it was a very nice natural environ and I hope that the new settlement makes good use of the watercourse through there. The upside is that if the planners get it wrong, we can open all the flood gates on Scrivener dam and just start again afterwards.
