New Years Eve

It’s always a painful decision for me. Go out to a bar (meh, can do that I guess), go to a pub, stay home (no way, it’s NYE!!), go to a house party and run the risk of it being crap and then you’re back wondering what to do or…. think of something really different and amazing – and I’m out of ideas.

In Sydney I’d go on a yacht on the harbour which was perfect. Grog and seafood from 7-1am, great music, you didn’t have to worry about what to do next or where to go, good fireworks twice during the evening, and a cruise on the water to boot! Then if you were wasted when you got off, you could still just go to one of the nearby bars. It was perfect.

So anyway, the purpose of this is to see what others are doing and what’s out there in Canberra. My plans just went down the toilet today so I’m wondering what else is happening.

So… for a change of pace, 7 years on and Canberra still doesn’t seem to have an events page that businesses can be bothered updating for New Years Eve. I’m not just talking about Civic or bars. Surely there must be restaurants that are putting on a show or special menu – degustation, seafood, wine? Does anyone have any information on Southside events or a link to a page I can’t find?

There is this one:

and this:

My advice if going out is to get wherever you are going early, grab a table and settle in.

Have you ever tried to see out NYE without alcohol?
It may be a revelation to see in the New Year sober for the first time in your life.

I heard about this Latin New Years Eve with a live band, Mi Tierra or something. It’s at Digress Restaurant & Lounge. It looks pretty exciting! Hopefully it might make me a little less homesick (I’m travelling here from Peru)

Your eardrums will bleed – loud Latin bands are conversation killers.

Summernats being the very next day you couldn’t pay me to go clubbing in Canberra, it’ll be 10:1 guy to girl ratio at best with some filthy Sydney tourists expecting to pick up and being aggressive when they can’t manage it, just like every time it’s this close.

Personally I’m over getting wasted on new years and am going to try and have a nice dinner/drinks with music, but I’ll probably end up wasted anyway.

I get paid to attend various New Years Eve celebrations etc, which kind of sucks because I never get to do my own thing. Ho Hum.

Hmmm, is this the same solidarity that boasted about cutting in line at the opening of Honkytonks? If so, how come you didn’t get a VIP invite to that event in the first place, since you’re so popular?!? 🙂

Hope the Sao stays dry … no-one enjoys soggy Sao :-\

I love the fact that a four year old thread can be picked up and still be relevant because so little changes in Canberra when we’re talking about celebrations, except for maybe one band somewhere which appeals to a Peruvian (no offence to them!).

(or i might be down the cotter in a tent round a fire with marshmallows and a couple bottles of something refreshing…)

Both of those sound very attractive. 😀

The times I’ve tried to go out with friends in Civic, the ridiculous cover charges to get into establishments or the fact that they’re closed altogether made it rather a flat celebration. Last year after being turned down we sat on the roof of a particular public housing complex next to Civic and watched the fireworks until the friendly security came and asked us to come down! This year we probably won’t be leaving the house.

I reflect Camerons ideas and sentiments

I generally do the house party thing – at my own place. If anyone is being a downer I can usually kick them out 😀

No chance of me going to the city for NYE in this town – too many wankers spoiling it for the reliable majority.

Almost every year I’ve done one of two things – go down to the alps or to the coast. I’ve had the odd NYE in town but that gets messy and tried really quick. The right group for a house party is great but it’s hard to get away if one or two people are having a downer and taking everyone else with them.

This year it’s the coast and it should be awesome, particularly if the wowsers don’t upset plans for the odd beach bonfire

Bloody Canberra. Bloody old age.
