Events ACT have published details of the show they’re putting on for those who remain in town this New Year’s Eve.

The city will be in party mode on New Year’s Eve with two celebrations to bring in 2012.

Civic Square will play host to a family-friendly music line-up while Garema Place brings in the New Year with bass beats and high-energy dancing.

At 7.00pm families can head to Civic Square for an entertainment line-up for all ages with Ian Moss headlining, local Canberra band Heuristic to lead the party and the unique sound of the Bridge Between to keep you captivated. This is a great opportunity for parents to bring their children to Civic to enjoy the early fireworks at 9.00pm.

Then Civic will raise the roof with the Bass in the Place dance in Garema Place from 9.00pm. The city centre will play host to top mixing talent DJ Rush, DJ Rawson, DJ Chris Fraser and VJ Insan3.

One of Canberra’s most state-of-the-art pyrotechnic shows will complete the night, with the fireworks at midnight set to a soundtrack heralding in the New Year.

Both the Civic Square and Garema Place events are alcohol-free to encourage a safe and friendly atmosphere.

ACTION Buses will operate on a normal Saturday timetable, with the Nightrider service also available. Please refer to www.action.act.gov.au for all the details.

For further information phone Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

Not everyone wants to fork out hundreds of dollars to travel to sydney just to get drunk.

Also, many people work (late) on New Years Eve or Day

Actually, everyone goes to the beach. You must be under 23 to assume the alternative to NYE Canberra is Sydney.

I still havent forgiven Ian Moss for ‘Tucker’s Daughter’. He writes Bow River and then that awful song?

“Garema Place brings in the New Year with bass beats and high-energy dancing.”

Way to go selling it to the kids, dad! Alcohol-free, high-energy dancing? Sounds like Rock Eisteddfod!

I’d rather go to bed early and read tea leaves.

“one of Canberra’s most state of the art pyrotechnic shows”

Three things stop that from impressing me: one of, Canberra and pyrotechnic.

Where do you need to be to see the fireworks? Do they launch from the lake or from the buildings around Garema place

+1

Anyone got some info on the 9pm event? We were looking at taking the kids (3 under 6) but were unsure about Civic Square and the crowds.

too late for this year, but fyi, anywhere round the lake is good to watch the fireworks with little kids – near the national library or the museum.

Loads of families and the fireworks are a bit further away so not so noisy, but still gorgeous.

And remember to bring a torch to pack up all your stuff in the dark.

Only if you use a very broad definition of people. Sub-human troglodytes might be more accurate

So, Stevian, your New Year’s resolution is to be as happy and fun-loving as last year?

I passed through both events while club hopping and also en route to watch fireworks. both were very well attended. coppers were out in force as were SES. there was one big brawl that broke out in Petrie plaza and I’m sure others, but cops did ok with the one I saw. it was just kids.
