Computer World is reporting that NextDC have bought up a 6,000 square metre data centre here in Canberra as part of a push to creating an Australian “cloud” to dell to government.

“Cloud providers are looking to service Federal Government agencies, ideally want to house their critical infrastructures in an independent, secure and well-connected data centre,” he said in a statement.

The Federal Government signalled in January that it would begin encouraging the use of Cloud-based services via the release of its draft cloud strategy paper. The paper is aimed at educating agencies on the delivery model and discuss potential future adoption for public-facing, unclassified services and information.

I’m pretty sure it’s the one on Battye Street Bruce. The old ATO DC.

You would be correct. It is the old ATO Bruce DataCenter that they’ve bought. And it was EOL on the 30th of June I believe.

Pretty sure that one is in the later stages of being decommissioned, with a view to redeveloping the site into residential units.

I believe that was the original plan, however I have since heard they ditched those plans and re-leased it as a Datacentre.

Also, there aren’t any other vacant datacentres around that fit the description in the media release.
“This strategically located facility is approximately 6 kms northwest of ACT’s capital city of Canberra offering excellent access to major public infrastructures. The purpose-built data centre….”

Except the one right next door!

Yes, there is one next door but it’s not vacant and is still in use by some Government agency

DE(E)WR, I believe.

Yep, and Centrelink, plus a few others.

Ahh, that would explain why the old Tax datacentre in Bruce has been desserted, carwise, for weeks! I was going to ask if someone knew what was going on there (Normally that carpark was chockers)…

Government needs more data centre space. Cloud services, not so much…

I cant seem to find any information on what datacentre they purchased and who owned it previously?
