Ngunnawal Shops Open Space?

Looking for a tweet about what the work on the playground at the Platypus shops was, I came across this odd tweet from the ACT Economic Development Directorate.

Economic Development ?
@ACTEDD
Block 18 Section 44 Ngunnawal consultation open #Canberra #haveyoursay http://bit.ly/SqJqoI

The link shows that it is a consultation for the parkland next to the carpark at the Ngunnawal shops. What intrigues is the manner in which a previous consultation on that very same space received and noted community feedback that the land remain open space, however a merry dance then ensued where the land was OFFERED to TAMS, who said they didn’t want it. Less than a month passes between the land being removed from the Land Release Program and TAMS declining to take it.

Now the Economic Development dept is holding consultations on what to do with the land. Kind of points to the outcome being sought.

Is this how it works now? We just consult again and again until we get the answer we want?

Looks like they got the answer they wanted, and in the spirit of consultation the land will be sold for development.

This financial year.

Just giving this one a bump: Consultation closes in four days.

As for the zoning, I think it covers just about anything but a residential house….last thing it needs is a large commercial structure that lessens the area further.

Add to that, a search of “Ngunnawal” on RA brings up plenty of references to the SPAR, and before that, Video Ezy, getting rolled. There’s already two empty shops there. How do they think more retail space will be used?

Is it the platypus shops or the ones off Wanganeen?

No. Sorry for the Red herring at the start, the mention of the Platypus Shops (which are off Paul Coe Cres) was in reference to another thread about playgrounds being surrounded by temp fencing without explanation.

The open space discussed in the consultation is between the carpark of the shops off of Wanganeen Ave, and Yarrawonga St where it meets Jabbanunga St.

God we have some funny sounding place names. Not that I mind, but I often wonder if giving our places Aboriginal names isn’t just rubbing more salt in the wounds left by colonialism rather than any meaningful symbol of reconciliation.

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking that this is a Merry-Go-Round…….In fact the letter received in the last day or so, makes it more confusing. If you were a person that had only just moved in, and you received that letter, it would make almost no sense at all.

I personally think it would be better left as green open space. It has some nice old trees on it. As for the zoning, I think it covers just about anything but a residential house….last thing it needs is a large commercial structure that lessens the area further.

I agree! Seems a bit of a dodgy system to me! They will develop every cm of land if there is an extra dollar to be made and it doesn’t matter what the community wants.
