Chief Minister Gallagher is thrilled by patronage for this summer’s Nightrider:

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Katy Gallagher, has declared the ACT Government’s Nightrider bus service a resounding success with 2,608 people utilising the service throughout December2011.

“The ACT Government’s Nightrider service proved a very popular and affordable option for people to get home safely after a night out during the festive season,” the Chief Minister said.

“A total of 2,608people used the buses across the four weekends they operated. This includes 548 people on the opening weekend, 776 people on the second weekend, 145 on Friday 23 December service and 1,139 on the final weekend, which included New Year’s Eve.

“Compared to the 979 people who used the service in the same period the previous year, this is a significant increase and a great result,” the Chief Minister said.

Now can we have night buses through the rest of the year?

Doesn’t that New Years weekend stat work out at something like 1 per cent of revellers? Generously assuming 20 per cent found a taxi, looks like around four in five drove themselves home. Hard to interpret that as effective on any score.

Where are you getting the total for NYE?

Keep in mind plenty of people with kids would have gone in for the 9pm fireworks and gone home then, which makes any ACT government boasts of numbers of people who celebrated in civic less relevant. The ACT government events were all ages, no alcohol allowed too so people who went there probably aren’t exactly the main targets for the nightrider service, even if they were there till midnight or a bit later.

I was out on NYE myself, caught a nightrider home and did actually note it wasn’t that busy in the nightclubs. The bus I took (one of the ones around 3am I think) was reasonably full, 2/3rds to 3/4ers (approximate cause I wasn’t exactly sober). Everyone who wanted to got on did and there wasn’t anyone standing, but it was certainly was well used.

What bugs me is they never have Thursday nights; which would get the more usage as it does tend to be the clubbing night here

I never got that, going to work on Friday with a hang over when on Saturday you could sleep it off.

It’s mainly uni students (or at least it was a couple of years ago) and it’s relatively rare (and unlucky) to have classes first thing Friday morning. Casual jobs of the sort most students have are also unlikely to regularly involve a specific morning too.

Still is, and some younger public servants. Fact of the matter is if you can get the young to use it as a regular service eventually they will be using it as they are older putting more people using the service which will allow it to be granted more funding and increase the scope of it.

On a Friday, you don’t have to talk it up, people can see for themselves 🙂 To be honest, if I have a few beverages too many on a Thursday, it takes me to Tuesday to feel better. Bloody old age, grumble, grumble…

Well obviously the Platform 7 sign worked

Now can we have night buses through the rest of the year?

Seconded. It’s always seemed rather silly not to have late night busses on weekends.
