Nine-times drink driver apprehended again
Release Date: Tuesday, August 30 2011, 09:17 AM

A 35-year-old Duffy man who was caught drink driving on Wednesday night (August 24) has nine previous drink driving convictions.

About 10.40pm members from Woden Police Station were conducting random breath testing on Namatjira Drive, Fisher, when they stopped the driver of a white Toyota Land Cruiser.

The driver, who is subject to an alcohol limit of 0.05, underwent a breath screening test which returned a positive result. He was taken to Woden Police Station for a breath analysis and recorded 0.146. As a result of this reading he was served with an Immediate Suspension Notice, suspending his right to drive.

A further 26 people have been caught for drink driving in the past week (August 23 to 29). The highest reading was recorded by a 53-year-old Watson man with 0.174 yesterday morning (Monday, August 29).

About 9.25am City Police Station members were driving along Philip Avenue in Downer when they saw a red Holden Nova sedan driving on the wrong side of the road.

Police spoke to the driver, asking why he was going down the wrong side of the road, to which he replied “I always go that way”. He was issued with an Immediate Suspension Notice and his licence was seized.

What a useless legislative structure we must have to allow someone to actually be convicted of the same offense this many times and still be legally driving. No wonder people think licenses are a right and not a privilege.

Have to sympathise with this driver as it is difficult to discern that Phillip Ave has another road on the other side for vehicle travelling in he opposite direction.

Police should be able to confiscate the vehicle like they can do to hoons who do burn-outs etc. That would at least remove the idiot from the road and not allow him to be picked up for the 10th time drink driving

I want to know more about this story that was tacked on the end!

Why did he still have a licence? It is pathetic the way repeat drinking and driving is tolerated in Australia. The magistrates here have zero imagination or they are shackled by stupid laws? This moron will kill someone, and then what..??

Correct Sir. Probably after the third time not ninth.
And some community service working for ambos so he can start to appreciate what a road fatality is really like.

A friend of a friend was recently convicted of drink driving and received a community service order. He’ll spend the next 6 months working off the time on his (no longer) free weekends, and from others Ive known who have simply gotten a fine for DUI, his punishment will sink in a lot more.

Start lopping off his digits without anaesthetic. He should be down four fingers at least by now.

The ACT Courts need to show this fool that there are consequences for ones actions: a short stint in gaol.

I half agree, a short stint would be fine the 3rd or 4th time, but by the 9th time, its time for this guy to be in for a decade or two, he clearly is happy to keep going till he kills somone, so book him for that in advance!

It’s scary to ponder how many times he’s drunk driven and not got caught. Seems it’s near impossible to get sent to the big house these days.

It’s not very nice to know that a nine time CONVICTED drunk driver drives a large four wheel drive around Canberra.

He should be super-glued to a Moped so he can only kill himself.

Wouldnt matter if he was in a Hyundai Gets, he is still dangerous…….
