I’m moving to a new rental property in Downer and have been informed by Telstra that I will not have access to broadband!!?

Any suggestions for what I can do?

Do I have any other options for broadband, or am I resigned to purchasing wireless usb internet or an iPhone?

I have a wireless dongle. They are so convenient, they’re prepaid, you just buy the thing for $70 and off you go!

Not recommended if you’re planning on watching a lot of TV although apparently it’s just fine for playing Warcraft.

Plus you can just take it down to Dickson and do your email over a coffee. 🙂

It does seem a bit strange that you’d have no ADSL access at all. ADSL2 has a fairly long reach. Looking at exchange info for Downer at http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au it looks like half of Downer is on the Civic exchange, the other half on the Crace exchange. Throwing in a random address that connects to Civic, which is the furthest exchange, I can’t see your cable distance being over 5km – you won’t get fast speeds at that distance, but you should get acceptable speeds.

Hmmm, ADSL2 has less of a reach than ‘standard’ ADSL. Speed is all distance based so the further the distance the less the speed.

Chuck your address in the search on that site, and see what its estimated cable distance to your exchange is – and find out which exchange you’re actually on. Then try applying through one of the other providers in that exchange – they’re all listed at the bottom.

If ADSL isn’t available, look into TransACT – a quick search looks to indicate that TransACT cable is available in Downer – that’ll be a better option than wireless.

I’m guessing you are screwed. It’s most likely too far from the exchange for ADSL. Wireless will cost a ton if you aren’t careful.

Have a look through http://www.whirlpool.net.au/
There may be some other options listed there or people in your situation who might be able to help out.

I thought Downer was all wired for transact broadband?

Any other options for broadband…….nope……purchasing a wireless usb Yep or an iPhone… yep……

When I was in the same situation (I moved 800 metres down the road and now have lovely broadband) I was told by Telstra that enough people write to Telstr from the area they might re cable…..ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, why when they can push you into wireless 3G and tell you that is the future…..

Hmm, Im in downer and have previously had ADSL, so check around providers and youll find some. If you get wireless BB, which I do not suggest, as I have been stuck on it for the past two years and it is TERRIBLE. I have it with 3 and yeah, dont do it. Ive been stuck with it for two years now my contract is just about to expire finally.
