No-fault insurance scheme set for ACT

A no-fault insurance scheme will be set up in the ACT thanks to new laws made by the Legislative Assembly.

From July 1, the insurance scheme will provide long-term care for people who are seriously injured in car accidents (victims currently have to prove that someone else is at fault in order to claim).

Treasurer Andrew Barr has stressed that this wouldn’t need to be used in an ideal world. “But the averages are, and the expectations are, that somewhere between three and six people a year would be catastrophically injured and require this support.”

The ACT Opposition has of course raised questions about the level of the Territory’s insurance premium and what the scheme will cost to administer.

It is estimated that the levy cost will be around $34 per year.

“The scheme will be administered by means of a buy-in to the existing NSW Lifetime Care and Support (LTCS) Scheme. Services provided by the NSW LTCS Authority include assessment of treatment and care needs, resolution of disputes, and case co-ordination. ” (from Andrew Barr’s site)

This sounds good – it will presumably keep to a minimum the need for extra bureaucracy in the ACT, and with reduced legalism, the focus can (as it properly should) be on caring for the catastrophically injured.
