No glory for the raiders

In a game that went down to the final second, the raiders were beaten by 32-26 against the Sharks at Canberra Stadium yesterday. A match summary is available at the Fairfax press.

It was enjoyable to watch Raiders veteran Jason Smith and Sharks half Brett Kimmorley tussle in their kicking and ability to create tries. Kimmorly clearly demonstrated why he is currently one of the best halves in the game.

The game was marred by Simon Woolford being placed on report for a high tackle and heavy penalty count (12-3) against the Raiders. Everytime the Raiders play with Mander as referee, the Raiders walk away with a hefty penalty count against them. When it comes to the Raiders he (Mander) seems to have a chip on his shoulder. To his credit he did make some correct calls yesterday. However his interpretation of ruck infringements and high tackles was very inconsistent.

Phil Goul also has his say on yesterday’s game here, which he described as being an ‘old fashioned duel’.

Didn’t they ever botch some chances in the last 5 minutes?

good play made those overlaps but ordinary play let them close again.
