No intention to close Northbourne.

There’s a lot of scuttlebutt going around that Northbourne Avenue is going to be closed by the high winds.

We have this statement from Territory And Municipal Services:

As per any other road, that is dependent on how the weather goes. It will only be closed if required. At this stage there is no intention to close the road.

The CT artical has been updated again with no note of edit, every thing prior to the line:
“Wind gusts exceeding 80km/h lashed Canberra all day yesterday.” was not there yesterday.

And every thing past that Line has not direct meaning for “Northbourne Ave”(eg. Old artical), Atleast the articall is now more factual, I’m guessing.

Well, ACTPol_Traffic confirmed it was a possibility:

Police media were very clear to us that is what not a matter for police, but TAMS and Roads ACT (part of TAMS).

Well, ACTPol_Traffic confirmed it was a possibility:

I’m not sure something can be “scuttlebutt” or “rumour” if the story is at the front of a newspaper’s website, and they’re quoting a named person at the Bureau about what wind-strength will result in the road’s closure.

The problem being that weather forecasters don’t actually do road closures.

it always sounded a bit dodgy, like an april fools day joke. why would they close the main road in the cbd?

Maybe it’s to pre-emptively force everyone on to the Majura Tollway?

You can thank the Canberra Times and there Twitter Feed for that one, the article I’m guessing has been edited since, but currently Google search still has the old heading and first line cached.

Search Google for “Gusts could close Northbourne Ave”

what was posted to twitter:
“Canberra Times RSS

What is worse than scare mongering reporters, is those that try to cover it up.
As there is no note to say that the article has been updated, which you normally see when CT’s web article are updated.

I am not sure if some RiotACT members are aware of this, but some trees on the Northbourne Avenue median strip are being held up by lots of ropes being tied around them. I noticed 3 of such trees near the Macarthur Avenue traffic lights. I thought someone was being an idiot, until I noticed an official sign stating what was going on.

If the rope was white and in patterns then it’s an art installation.

But seriously, if such trees were going to cause major trouble I am sure they would be knocked down & dragged away.

People seem to be unaware of or have forgotten the large number of trees on Northbourne Avenue that fell during strong winds one Sunday in Autumn [?] last year. I saw at least two entire large trees on the road itself, several that had fallen onto median strip, and lots of large branches on the road. At the time, I was amazed no one was injured. The government can’t prevent everything.

A tree came down across the right lane of the Monaro heading South, just before the prison, just before 5pm tonight as I was heading home. It was about 5 cars in front of me and was pretty scary. Luckily, all the cars were slowing down for the traffic lights and I think it fell between 2 cars. It was a whole tree though from what I saw – not just a branch.

This could of been what brought on the concerns about closing Northbourne Avenue. But seriously, if such trees were going to cause major trouble I am sure they would be knocked down & dragged away.

Darn wind near blew me van off the parkway tonight, felt like a car hit her.

Because the mid-section is packed with evergreen eucalyptus trees and you can never tell when one might fall because they always look healthy (and thus hide the dead branches)?

Northbourne Ave has never been closed ahead of possible high winds.

When you think calmly about it, the exposure to wind on Nthbn Ave is probably minimal due to the protection via surrounding mountains and ridges, so that could very well be true even for the future. If trees do fall there then it would probably be the least of Canberrans worries (other places will be devastated).

A few trees came down on Northbourne Avenue

You mean branches, right? Just debris.

Yeah, apologies for the rumour that turned out to be false. But where I come from (Western Syd) falling trees that does damage to properties and can potential kill are quite common.

False rumour repeated on Twitter until accepted by idiots. Now proven false.

Northbourne Ave has never been closed ahead of possible high winds.

Yeah, I was passing on what I was hearing from a work mate.

Trust me, we had plenty of laughs at his expense when he was freaking out about the ‘traffic’ that he’d have to drive through if he worked through to the 5pm end of his shift…

I’ll be sure to give him plenty tomorrow, unless the road really does close during peak hour. 🙂
