No man's road in Mawson

Rioter Reprobate just sent us this confusing set of images.

These photos were taken outside Pizza Capers Mawson, just near the Woolies.

Approaching the carpark off Mawson Pl, there is a road into the carpark but there are two No Entry signs preventing entry. OK… but once in the carpark, there are another two signs in front of the exact same area stating… “No Exit”. WTF?!? It is an actual road, not a continuation of the footpath, and there are also No Parking signs covering the area the width of the road/driveway. Without any bollards or barriers, drivers continue to use this to get in and out of the carpark.

What genius in Roads ACT was responsible for this? Or is it a classic case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing?

From Reprobate.

One way? Or another?

I remember when they first built that carpark it was open slather on that bit of road. People were entering and leaving the carpark via that road then a few months later the markings and signs appeared. It’s all a bit mysterious because there are no riders on the No Entry signs – ie “Service Vehicles Excepted”, so for all intents and purposes nobody is allowed to use that bit of road.

That’s the Mawson cycle loop. Like Civic’s, it’s a bit smaller, but about as useful.

Doubtless there are compelling and perfectly logical reasons for this (if you look hard enough and think very carefully) but it sounds like another of the local shopping centre make-overs which seem to replace dowdy but functional arrangements with something which is supposedly more modern, but tacky-looking and impractical.

Gee, I hope no trucks disobey the signs then.

Oh – in case it is unclear – there is another road at the end of the parking lot (which is a tiny offshoot of the major Southlands parking area and holds maybe 20 vehicles). That road is clearly intended to be the official entry and exit point.

It seems to be for the specific use of truck deliveries into the somewhat snug confines of that parking area. If I recall correctly the space directly beyond the sign is a loading zone only parking spot and I have often seen delivery trucks use it.

While popping into the parking from the No Entry side is possible, exiting via the No Exit bit is not sensible, as the on street parking does make it almost impossible to see oncoming traffic.
