No more Mark Carmody on the ABC News

johnboy 30 March 2012 35

The ABC types are getting excited on Twitter about the departure of the in equal parts loved and loathed Mark Carmody from the evening news:

Siobhan Heanue ? @siobhanheanue
The irrepressible, inimitable Mark Carmody is leaving @abcnewsACT. Who will plunder the OPH rose gardens now?

For those still watching the ABC News Mark Carmody tended to be an acquired taste, but one much admired once understood.

Perhaps he’ll get a job on Chinese TV, like the similarly loved/hated ABC Melbourne weather presenter from the nineties.

thank christ.

I like him. Will be missed. By me, anyway

Look, he was a terrible weather presenter. Mixing Tim Bailey style lack of focus with a grasp of English second only to Sir Joh B P was never going to work.

That said, by all accounts he’s a nice fellow with a genuine passion for gardening and Canberra, so all the best to him.

It just wasn’t the right role for him, just as you wouldn’t have Costa the organic gardener reading the news.

Any idea who will be replacing him?

Would be nice to have Mark back on the radio doing the gardening spot on Saturday morning’s. That’s his bag, presenting on TV is not.

This would be the best news I’ve heard all week. He was a loon of massive proportions.

does that mean he’ll leave the 666 drive show, too? aah, at last!

He’s a likeable duffer and a good Canberran – just was never particularly suited to reading the weather.

And I don’t know about inimitable. We do Carmody impersonations about 7:28pm every night in my house. Pregnant pause…. Good Evening Virginia!!

How about no-one. The news presenter is perfectly capable of reading out the weather, and they usually do on the weekends and the days Mark is elsewhere. That way the cash-strapped ABC could spend the money it saves on something more worthwhile.

Cash strapped ABC? Oh my aching sides. The ABC is better resourced, and higher paid, than almost every other media organisation out there.

Ahh … the “ABC Melbourne” person was Edwin Maher. When I lived in Victoria, I listened to him, mystified, when he said “…and continued fine north of the ranges”, because I grew up in a normal state where mountains go north-south, not east-west.

Maybe not the greatest weather presenter but I like him and I’ll miss seeing what flower he’s wearing each day.

His enunciation of “Relative Humidity” was a nightly highlight. Will be missed.

A bit of a love/hate thing happening in our house re Mark.

At least “showers” will get its second syllable back… always have a laugh at the way he says it but couldn’t even start to put his pronounciation in writing “shaaaares” but with more of an “oww” sound??

I liked Mr Carmody. No doubt they’ll get an “all teeth and t!ts” weather bunny girl in, just like every other channel.

So not all bad news then…

EvanJames EvanJames 4:13 pm 30 Mar 12

He’ll be missed. Most “weather presenters” know little about the weather, at least he had a vested interest in it being a gardener, and a cyclist. I really liked his way of presenting, complete with whatever was on his lapel that day. I guess we’ll get some plastic person who’s done a media degree, and never makes a mistake. Yuck.

Guess who the new boss of Gardening Australia is?!

Weather presenters should not be on the TV news, the talking head can just as easily read the weather off the teleprompter as she can the other bits, same goes for the pretend sports presenter reading out prepared words. Why have a talking head anyways? Are their any people who actually believe the talking head adds anything to the value of the news?

Virginia will probably be celebrating the most. No longer will she have to engage in silly banter and try to smile whenever he cracks one of his “jokes”.

I noticed that and a fine choice I think. I’ve only seen a few snippets over the time since Peter Cundall left, but each time it lacked the energy and passion it had with Peter getting arm deep in blood and bone in his Hobart garden. Costa’s enthusiasm should be great.
