No More Neighbourhood Watch For Dickson

Dickson Neighbourhood Watch is shutting up shop after 21 years.

It is a bit sad – I’m not sure whether they couldn’t get anyone to deliver the newsletter, or perhaps to produce it. Or maybe noone turned up to their meetings.

My inner north neighbourhood watch is fairly active (in the sightly haphazard way of volunteer organisations). I actually read the little newsletter to find out what is happening locally – and for the crime stats.

As the ABC article says, it is always harder to set these things up than it is to keep them going, so it is a pity the Dickson branch has to close altogether.

Do most areas of Canberra still have neighbourhood watch?
And are they all still run by little old ladies (and gents)?

We have neighbourhood watch traditions in Tuggeranong: your house gets knocked over and the whole neighbourhood watches but doesn’t see a thing.

Neighbour hood watch is still running out in Ngunnawall, and it is driven by a couple of 70 years old people

They had a thing about this on the ABC news. Apparently, the oldies who set it up were still running it, no younger ones were putting their hands up, and the oldies were getting tired of running it all. Rather sad, and it does suggest that people are getting more insular, less public-minded. selfish and lazy, even.
