No Parking along the Monaro Highway

Govco are really sinking the boot into those nasty Liberal voting Tuggeranongites. They have now banned parking on this length of the Monaro. Initially the signs stated it was no standing, but changed to no parking after about three days.

So no more pulling over to answer the phone, and of course this means the snow traffic driver-reviver stations will be no more.

But WHY? There has never appeared to be any problems on this stretch of road.

Eight of these signs have been installed, at a cost of about $2K per sign. I”m sure Pegussus could have done with that money.

One would like to think that, but many years ago when I worked in Civic I was doing some overtime on a Sunday afternoon and parked near the building I worked in. It was a dead end street near Hobart Place. I was clearly in a no parking zone, red kerbs and all, so I can’t really complain, aside from the fact that the parking inspector and myself were likely the only two people to have noticed my car that day.

You probably got pinged by a copper from the police station across the road. All the parking inspectors now work out of Macarthur House at Lyneham I believe and they are ‘bussed” to the areas they are assigned to.

There’s been a couple of advertising vehicles parked there on weekdays long after these signs were put up just opposite Hume so they obviously have taken no notice. And yesterday a flower seller was set up in what I pointed out in a previous post was a grey area, the truck rest area which is technically insider the No Parking Zone.

All that sign litter for absolutely no gain.

They are hardly morons when it is 100% legal to park there. Though do note what you mean about merging etc, what they should have done when they did the recent intersection works (heading towards the memorial) is swung the left two lanes, noting the right is right turn only to meet with the middle two lanes, then people can park in the left and cars can use the two lanes on the right. Afterall it isn’t like Anzac Parade is 3 lanes due to traffic volume, it is 3 lanes for the ceremonial aspect.

I get it now. Someone planning to launch an RPG would have second thoughts once they realise it violates parking laws.

OK, I can see your arguement.

But why the stretch from the servo south to Rose Cottage? And why can you park accross the road from another data centre in Hume without restriction?

And why are we still not told WHY these parking restrictions are now in place?

Well, I tried to tell you all why in comment # 15 but all that ensues is an argument about the subtle differences of “no parking” and “no standing” and the possible closure of the driver reviver stop.
Some people on this blog can’t see the wood for the trees.
I’ll spell it out for you all again with some guidelines concerning physical security from a typical data centre handbook:
The following factors need to be reviewed when making your location decision:
1. Where is the corporate headquarters located?
2. What are the demographics of the area?
3. What modes of transportation are nearby?
4. What climate risks exist (earthquake, flooding, tornado, hurricanes, wildfires)?
5. Has your company received threats or harassment in the past?
6. Does your existing data center meet what is required for current data center security construction practices (proper property line set-back, site hardening, controlled access to site or proper blast mitigation components such as laminated windows, hardened wall construction and so on)? If not, what will it cost to bring your current data center up to speed? Will it be cheaper to factor in these items into the design of the new data center?
7. What type of security staff coverage will be required if the data center is separate from headquarters? Have you factored in the cost of additional security staff if your data center is separate? Is this within your budget?
8. Can existing security at the headquarters building monitor a separate data center with technology (security system, digital video) and then provide remote response if an event occurs?

And so on.

You both might want to check your road rules:
The driver of a vehicle (except an emergency vehicle or police vehicle) must not use a mobile phone that the driver is holding in his or her hand while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, unless the driver is exempt from this rule under another law of this jurisdiction.

IE – stopping does not allow you to use your phone. Parking does. No stopping/parking on this stretch of road prevents you from using your phone.

So you are complaining that they made a mistake (making it no standing) then corrected that mistake (made it no parking)?

No parking sign is “better” or “more relaxed” than no standing.

I think it is about the data centre in Sheppard Street Hume that backs onto the Monaro Highway and the data centres that are planned for the area on the Western side of the Monaro Highway.
The promoters of these cyber centres need a lot of security so the perimeters need to be free from latent threats such as EMR devices in parked vehicles, bombs and bus loads of cyber-hackers posing as Chinese tourists taking photos of the new Mugga Lane landfill.
As a rule, data centres cannot be built under flight paths near airports either.

Perhaps wanting to prevent the tradies working on the new industrial park from clogging the Hwy shoulders? Or possibly to ensure access for emergency vehicles (noting that there is an emergency facility just up the road)?

However, it would be nice if the public was kept informed.

It’s Anzac Parade

If morons can’t drive around someone paying their respects to the war dead, they should hand back their license.

Competent drivers scan hundreds of meters ahead looking for obstructions. If you can’t do that, drive in the middle lane. There’s three of them.

I wonder if they realised a ‘no stopping’ sign wouldn’t work in a zone with a set of traffic lights and some give way signs in it.

I’ll take one of those signs for the next 4 months near HMAS Harman.Inbound on Canberra Ave seems to attract every damm election billboard distracting drivers on a busy part of the road. Hello September.

This being the opening night of the 2013 ski season, Act Gov have accomplished their desire for no parking on the Monaro Highway.

Not a soul at the Driver Reviver station at the Isabella Drive roundabout. So we are sending all these motorists down the Monaro without the benefit of a break and a coffee.

Well there’s an interesting point, the truck rest area is before Isabella Dr technically, so that would surely be exempt (would be ludicrous otherwise). Wonder if Driver Reviver can set up there still?

Lanyon Drive is down near Hume, so they are saying no parking between the Qbn turn off and the Isabella Drive roundabout, that is where they normally put the driver reviver station.

The only vehicles I have ever seen parked on that stretch of road are vehicles that don’t have a choice, ie broken down trucks and cars that have been in collisions…. It’s not like people are parking in that area then walking to work to avoid paid parking? Well I hope not…

Why —- You ask why??? Why on earth should any act done by our council be based on any sane reason?

So is that the only area that has been affected? i.e. all the advertising/driverreviver/getoutforasneakywee type activities can still be done just south of Isabella or just north of Lanyon?

Unfortunately, the flower seller is no more. I believe he passed away a couple of years ago, and no-one has set up in his place.

If this plan is indeed to stop the occasional parked vehicle advertising a business, it is indeed a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Similar vehicles are parked all over the town doing precisely the same thing.

And it still stops the operation of the driver-reviver stations. Good thinking TAMS, stop a local business from advertising, and to hell with road safety.

I thought there was some guideline about reducing sign litter. These signs are hideous and redundant. The only people I’ve seen park on that stretch are the billboard vehicles for businesses in Hume, who you’d think could be easily taken care of by TAMS directly. Oh, and the flower guy near the NLA annex, but surely the government didn’t spend $8,000 to send the florist packing.

Don’t understand the rationale for this myself. I have driven that road a lot during peak hours and the only time people park there is during the election and the occasional advertising van, but they can move further up the road if they need to. Traffic slows down for rubber necking at accidents, but never for political slogan emblazed vehicles, or anyhting else for that matter.

Oh but you can. Parking is defined as your car being turned off and no one in the car. Stopping is defined as someone in the car with it in idle momentarily. That would be why they changed it from no- stopping to parking.
