No Super 14 next year?

RugbyHeaven brings word of trouble in SANZAR, the body which administers the Super 14 rugby championship. For those not into sport this is where the Brumbies play.

The South Africans are demanding a saffer team get a home final no matter how poorly their teams perform, New Zealand is less than keen on this idea and Australia is apparently keeping quiet for now.

But until they can resolve it (and when dealing with South African rugby who can say what it is they really want?) we haven’t actually got a competition for 2009.

Which is a bit of a worry 5 months out from the anticipated kickoff.

I interpretted DLS’ comment as:
Idealism is fine until it faces the blowtorch of practicality, but S14 is not a charity event.

OK, let’s move on shall we?

Hmmmm…bit of a stretch. Looks & sounds racist? Probably is. Certainly the comment offended me.

Sorry it offended you bandsy but no-one likes a dobber. And I’m not a racist – my house cleaner is Asian.

Pacific Islanders can come from many races and at it’s most broad would include the many caucasians that live in the Islands.

As so very many PI tours do end with all the money going missing it’s not as though the comment is without some merit.

> Finally, Pacific Islanders lack the necessary business acumen to make a fist of a venture such as this as evidenced through comically-run rugby tours in the past.

Hmmmm….are racist comments allowed johnboy?

The Super 14 without the South Africans is a bit like a Peach Melba without the peaches.

People are forever advocating a Pacific Islander team in the S14 without really thinking it through. For starters there is nothing even resembling an adequate stadium for home games anywhere in the South Pacific (even if they COULD attract a decent crowd). Additionally a Pacific Nations team would have to be wholly funded by SANZAR as they have no money of their own and therefore represent a poor financial investment. Finally, Pacific Islanders lack the necessary business acumen to make a fist of a venture such as this as evidenced through comically-run rugby tours in the past.

The whole concept of a PI team in the S14 has a very “Cool Runnings” flavour to it. Good for a few laughs but with John Candy pushing up daisies why try to revive the concept?

Yep, replace the South Africans with Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga.

If they leave the Super14 and play with the European comp, the tri nations becomes bi-nations for test purposes too…

I like having the SA teams there, although the comp could run just as well without them I’m sure. As mentioned, more Aussie & Kiwi teams & certainly a Pacific Island team (or two).

Would make the game a lot cleaner as well. The Africans are too dirty!! Get rid of them..

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing the S Africans leave the comp.

Their place could be made up with a few more Aust and NZ teams – maybe even a pacific island team. Then the competition could be expanded so that more games are played thanks to the reduced travel costs.
