Anyone know what the lights and noises last night where?

It happened around 10-11pm in the Watson/Fairburn region. a light went off followed by a boom, at first I thought it was thunder and lightning but did not sound/look like it? Lasted about 10 minutes and then stopped.

Anyone know??

[ED – The ABC said it was AFP Training which apprently has to be done after 11 to avoid upsetting the airport (?). Low cloud made the noise carry further than expected.]

Red & White? The police must have run out of blue!

I saw huge flashes over behind Mt Majura, I was going to take a photo but by the time i got camera they had stopped. It was pretty spectualar though, with the band the sky would light up in different colours, i saw a least red and white flashes.

uummm… thanks for clearing that up AD. I’ll sleep much better tonight and for next several millenia.

I heard that it is a cover up for an interglatactic battle between earth and some other planet. Its been happening for centuries apparently they have been fighting over the rights for a Pan Galactic Championship Frisbee Tournament. The odd thing is they can’t agree on who is going to host the tournament – but they can agree (and quite amicably I must say) on where they are going to stage the next round of not-so-friendly fire. It is going to be a long time before this comes to canberra again so people who observed this last night should feel honoured.

I was watching Stargate Atlantis so I at first thought it was part of the show…until it happened during an ad break.

Yes I could hear it at Palmerston. Sounded like fireworks.

and here i was thinking someone ate a dodgy vindaloo.

Is that what it was? I could hear it out at Amaroo – that’s some impressive sound carry.

The ABC story also says the police apologise for any distress caused.
